https://www.racefans.net/2023/06/02/f1-to-trial-ata-and-qualifying-rule-change-at-hungaroring-after-imola-cancellation/

Formula 1 will test its Alternative Tyre Allocation, which includes alterations to the qualifying rules, at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

The ATA, which was originally called the Revised Qualifying Format, was due for introduction at the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix. However that raced was cancelled due to flooding at the Imola circuit.

Under the ATA, drivers will receive 11 sets of tyres instead of the usual 13. The format also specifies which tyre compounds they must use for each of the three qualifying phases.

In Q1, all 20 drivers must run on hard tyres. Those who reach Q2 are permitted only to complete the session on mediums, with the ten who reach Q3 only allowed to do so on softs.

https://racer.com/2023/06/14/domenicali-on-f1-expansion-10-teams-are-more-than-enough/

Quote

Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali says “10 teams are more than enough” for the sport to be successful and he personally doesn’t want to expand beyond 20 cars on the grid.

Dzo Savard o glasinama o buducnosti VN Spanije:

Quote

Liberty continues to push for profits and more VIPs and the latest suggestion about the future of the Spanish Grand Prix is that it will be moved to Madrid as quickly as possible in order to turn it the biggest VIP event in Europe. This is not going to happen in Barcelona because VIPs tend not to be keen on visiting racing circuits surrounded by scrapyards, abattoirs and warehouses. And the traffic jams have not helped… This year the race drew a three-day crowd of 284,000, which is a decent score, but it is clear that the Barcelona circuit cannot handle more, whereas a city race in Madrid might top 400,000. The Madrid project is attractive and plans are far more advanced than people know, with a delegation of interested parties visiting the recent race in Miami. The track design is completed and work will start as soon as a contract is agreed. The circuit is around the IFEMA exhibition centre and would use existing roads and infrastructure. However, there will be two tunnels to go out to, and return from, an area of land that will be developed specifically for the track. This would include a high-banked corner similar to the new Hugenholzbocht at Zandvoort and would also go into an event area which houses the huge MadCool music festival. There is public transportation in place and the development will be adjacent to a vast new forest area that has already been planted. Thus the race has decent environmental credentials as well. Barcelona has a deal until 2026 but they may conclude that there is no point investing further in F1 if they are going to lose the race no matter what they do.

...the 2024 calendar is beginning to come together, although it will be a few more weeks before we get any official confirmation. The big thing that no-one has talked about yet is that the first two races of the year will be held on Saturday nights, rather than on the Sunday afternoons. This makes a lot of sense for the local organisers as in the Islamic world the “weekend” usually means Friday and Saturday, rather than the Western Saturday-Sunday. In the Arab world Sunday is a working day. The change is not due to this, however, but rather because of Ramadan, which is the period of religious devotion that makes it incompatible with Formula 1 racing. Ramadan begins on Sunday March 10 and so the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix has to be on the evening of Saturday March 9, and in order to get everything moved in the limited time available, the Bahrain GP will move forward a day to Saturday March 2. This will follow the pre-season tests at the Bahrain International Circuit over the last weekend of February.

Igrarije s budzetom:

https://www.grandprix.com/news/fia-looking-into-top-f1-teams-budget-cap-loopholes.html

Quote

La Gazzetta dello Sport claims the FIA is currently taking a close look at whether the top teams' non-F1 activities - including the design of boats, bikes and road cars - have created loopholes in the strict budget cap rules.

"There was a request for clarification for Mercedes, Ferrari, Red Bull and Aston Martin," reported correspondent Louis Perna.

https://www.grandprix.com/news/sauber-williams-want-f1-budget-cap-rule-changes.html

Quote

Midfield and lower-level Formula 1 teams are pushing for changes in the budget cap system to enable them to catch up in terms of infrastructure.

Before the Canadian GP, Williams boss James Vowles admitted the once-great team is now 20 years behind the top teams in terms of key infrastructure at the factory.

But he says the budget cap is now allowing Williams to catch up now that it can afford it.

"The numbers we're talking about here is hundreds of millions - not 10 million or 20 million - but hundreds of millions to sort of catch up with the level of investment," said Vowles.

"What we're looking for at the moment is the ability to have sporting equity - the ability to have infrastructure that matches our peers."

Another team very keen on rule changes is Sauber - currently known as Alfa Romeo. But by 2026, the Swiss outfit will have fully transitioned to become Audi's new works F1 team.

"The important difference is no longer the budget that each team has," team representative Alessandro Alunni Bravi told the Spanish newspaper El Mundo Deportivo.

"It's the infrastructure. The top teams have been investing without any limit in the previous 20 years so that their cutting-edge technology and facilities are not comparable to the rest of the teams," he added.

Bravi said it is now "a very important point" whether the FIA will allow the lagging teams to catch up.

"If we really want to get to a point of creating opportunities for everyone to aim for at least podiums, we have to put an end to this structural difference between big and small," he insisted.

If the FIA does allow some special investments for F1's non-top teams, Bravi thinks it will be possible for up to 6 or 7 teams to be fighting at the top.

"Now there are 3 or 4 teams that can fight at the top but I can imagine a much more competitive championship. In 2026 we will have 6 official manufacturers - a situation never seen in F1," the Italian lawyer added.

It has been a big week of investments in Formula 1, and while none of them involved Andretti Global, they are likely to have a big impact on Michael Andretti’s hopes of joining the sport.
