In 2020, Alexander Lukashenko allowed Svetlana Tikhanovskaya to run against him, thinking that a political novice – and a woman – would make no impact.

It was a massive miscalculation.

Tikhanovskaya, who decided to stand in place of her husband after Lukashenko put him in jail, claimed victory.

When Lukashenko was awarded 80% of the vote, crowds took to the streets in the biggest ever threat to his rule. The protests were ultimately crushed by riot police with mass arrests and brute force.

The European Union then refused to recognise Lukashenko's legitimacy as president.

Today, all the key opposition figures from that period are in prison or have fled abroad, like Tikhanovskaya. Former protesters still in Belarus have been scared into silence.

So the opposition leader is not urging them to take to the streets again on Sunday.

"We call on Belarusians to reject this sham and on the international community to reject the result," she tells the BBC. "But I say to Belarusians, you have to keep safe until the real moment of possibility.

"Because people live in constant fear, and the regime is now intensifying the repression."

A court in Moldova has sentenced a Kremlin-friendly regional politician to seven years in prison for funneling money from Russia to finance a political party.

Evgenia Gutul, the leader of Gagauzia, a historically pro-Russian ethnic region in southern Moldova, was detained in March on suspicion of electoral fraud and sentenced on Tuesday.

Prosecutors said that from 2019 to 2022, Gutul channeled undeclared funds into the country to finance a political party founded by Ilan Shor, Reuters reported. Shor is a pro-Russian businessman who has been convicted of fraud in Moldova and now lives in exile.

Gutul’s conviction comes just weeks before Moldovans vote in a crucial parliamentary election, in which Maia Sandu, the pro-Western president of the former Soviet country, is hoping to retain her governing majority.

 

“What we are seeing is a clear violation of democratic rules and norms in this country,” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Tuesday.

The president of Moldova Maia Sandu has warned that her country's independence and European future are in danger after police arrested dozens of people accused of involvement in a plot to stoke violent disorder, allegedly backed by Russia.

 

Just days before Sunday's pivotal parliamentary elections, Moldovan police said they had confiscated weapons and explosives in raids across the country.

 

They allege some of the 74 detainees had travelled to Serbia for training by Russian instructors, including with firearms.

 

Addressing the nation, President Sandu accused the Kremlin of "pouring hundreds of millions of euros" into Moldova in an attempt to foment violence and spread disinformation and fear.

Mislim da sam ovde negde ostavljao link jos letos gde je bilo svedocenje jednog od uhapsenih. Oni su dolazili u Srbiju, a zatim su uz pomoc veze prebacivani u Bosnu gde se i nalazi taj trening kamp.

Jedan od razloga zasto onomad Moldavske vlasti nisu htele da dozvole organizovanim navijackim grupama iz Srbije da dodju na utakmicu.

Igor Dodon, former president of Moldova and a member of the pro-Russian Patriotic Electoral Bloc, said Sunday's vote is a day when "the people are not afraid, but others are afraid of the people."

After casting his ballot, Dodon also dismissed the claims made by his rivals of "massive interference" by Moscow, insisting that “the interference came from the West.”

“We saw this interference through various foundations, through (US billionaire George) Soros and non-governmental organizations that intimidated people. We believe this to be wrong, we are in favor of good relations with the East and the West,” Dodon told reporters.

 

While the outcome of the vote will not be known until Sunday evening at the earliest, Dodon said it was "already clear that the opposition will win."

 

"But President Maia Sandu has indicated that the outcome of the election could be annulled, like it happened in Romania. This is why I am calling on everyone to join the protest at 12:00 at the parliament building, to protect our victory," he was quoted as saying by Russia's Interfax news agency.
