All four of the capital's major airports were closed for several hours to ensure safety but later reopened, Russia's aviation watchdog Rosaviatsia said on Telegram.

Moscow's mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, said on social media at least 19 Ukrainian drones had been destroyed before they reached the city "from different directions". He said some of the debris had landed on one of the key highways into the city, but there were no casualties.

It is the second night in a row that Russia has reported a drone attack by Ukraine - on Monday, Russia's defence ministry said it had destroyed 26 Ukrainian drones overnight.

It comes after reports on Monday of fresh attempts by Ukraine to cross into Russia's Kursk region.

Kyiv said it had hit a drone command unit in the Kursk region on Sunday near the Russian village of Tyotkino.

The new German foreign minister, Johann Wadephul, on Wednesday delivered a clear message of support for Ukraine — and a warning to Russia.

"Europe will defend and support Ukraine with all available means," he said upon arrival in Warsaw, Poland, where he was set to join an informal meeting of European foreign ministers.

"I think we are all in agreement that more needs to be done to support Ukraine," he continued, adding that there were "various ways to do this."

He insisted that "Ukraine can rely on Europe" and added, "Everyone in Moscow must understand that they will have to deal with us."

German arms deliveries to Ukraine again classified as secret

Whether Leopard tanks, rocket launchers, or air defense systems:

The "traffic light" government has published all weapons systems delivered to Ukraine online. This is now over.

Spoiler

After three years of extensive transparency, the new German government will again largely keep German arms deliveries to Ukraine secret. "The German government will significantly reduce communication regarding the delivery of weapons systems in the future," government sources said.

The main aim is to "deny the aggressor in the Ukraine war military advantages." public debate about arms deliveries is part of the "tactics of warfare." Reducing

Weapons list online since June 2022

The CDU/CSU government of Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) is thus returning to a practice that was already in place immediately after the outbreak of war under Chancellor Olaf Scholz's "traffic light" coalition. The SPD politician decided on February 27, 2022 – three days after the Russian invasion of Ukraine – to supply weapons to the attacked country. For about four months, there was hardly any communication about this.

decided In June 2022, following public pressure, the German government to post a detailed list of all arms deliveries online. To this day, the website Bundesregierung.de lists all delivered weapons and their quantities. For example, it states that Germany has delivered 25 self-propelled howitzers, 121 Leopard tanks, 1,050 armed drones, and 478,000 rounds of artillery ammunition.

government thus intended The Scholz to prove that Germany is Ukraine's largest arms supplier after the United States. The list was last updated on May 6, the day the new federal government was appointed.

What else does the Bundestag learn?

Now that's over. The new German government is making a U-turn and is once again keeping the arms deliveries secret in order to create "strategic ambiguity," as the technical jargon calls it: an ambiguity designed to conceal its own actions from the enemy.

How the Bundestag will be informed about the arms deliveries in the future has not yet been communicated. Unlike with the deployment of soldiers, Parliament does not have to approve them. However, it is likely that Parliament will be informed about the arms deliveries in a secret session of the Defense Committee.

Taurus also falls under secrecy

The federal government's change of course also has implications for a sensitive, open question in Friedrich Merz's Ukraine policy: Will the Taurus cruise missile be delivered or not? During the election campaign, Merz emphasized that he was willing to deliver it, but only in coordination with allies who have already delivered or have similar weapons.

In Europe, these are France and Great Britain. French President Emmanuel Macron, in response to a journalist's question about a possible German Taurus delivery on Tuesday during Merz's visit to Paris, said that they no longer wanted to discuss such a thing. "We will be transparent with the Ukrainians, we will meet their needs, but we will talk about it as little as possible," he said. This is good for the protection of the Ukrainians.

"Don't talk about weapon categories in every press conference"

"That's why we've decided not to provide definitive information in certain areas," Macron said. "We won't talk about weapon categories and models in every press conference. Because it's quite possible that the Russian army will also hear the answer to your questions."

Turkey is ready to host ceasefire talks between Russia and Ukraine, the country's president tells French President Emmanuel Macron.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan's announcement follows Russian President Vladimir Putin's proposal to hold "direct talks" with Ukraine in Istanbul.

Ukrainian President Zelensky says Ukraine "expect Russia to confirm a ceasefire – full, lasting, and reliable – starting tomorrow, 12 May, and Ukraine is ready to meet.”

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz calls President Putin's offer to hold talks with Ukraine "far from sufficient".

He says Russia's willingness to talk is a "good sign" but says European leaders expect Moscow to agree to a ceasefire.

"First, the guns must fall silent before talks can begin."

Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk repeats the call for Russia to agree to a 30-day unconditional ceasefire starting tomorrow.

"In response to our appeal, the Russians have proposed peace talks starting May 15. The world, however, іs waiting for univocal decision on an immediate and unconditional ceasefire.

"Ukraine is ready. No more victims!" he says in a social media post.

Ukraine said Russia fired 108 drones overnight, despite attempts from Ukraine and its allies to reach a 30-day ceasefire agreement by Monday.

"From 11:00 pm on May 11, the enemy attacked with 108 Shaheds and other types of drones," the air force said, adding that "as of 08:30 am, 55 drones were confirmed downed."

The attack also included 30 stimulator drones which were lost along the way without hitting anything, the message on Telegram said.
