Toyota Gazoo Racing’s No. 8 GR010 HYBRID set the pace in the opening practice session of race week at Le Mans, Brendon Hartley reeling off a 3m27.742s to go just over a tenth faster than the sister No. 7 car.

Unsurprisingly, the pace at the head of the field improved from the Test Day almost immediately. The best time on Sunday was a 3m29.504s from the No. 51 AF Corse Ferrari. It was bettered in the opening minutes by Jose Maria Lopez in the No. 7 Toyota, who set a 3m28.290s.

By the end of the session, 13 cars set times under the 3m30s mark, though there is still almost certainly plenty of pace to come as the week progresses.

Ferrari AF Corse flexed its muscles in qualifying tonight for the 24 Hours of Le Mans at the Circuit de la Sarthe. Its pair of 499Ps set blistering times in the red-flag interrupted hour to secure spots in Hyperpole in fine style, ending up first and second on the timing screens.

Porsche Penske Motorsport’s No.6 963 topped the second free practice session of Le Mans race week this evening, as the teams and drivers got their first taste of night running ahead of this weekend’s race. Crucially, it also allowed the drivers to complete their minimum required night laps early.

Ferrari AF Corse has locked out the front row for the 100th anniversary running of the Le Mans 24 Hours, after Antonio Fuoco and Alessandro Pier Guidi produced blistering times in the team’s pair of 499Ps during tonight’s Hyperpole session. It was a landmark result for the Italian manufacturer, which will start the French endurance classic from pole for the first time since 1973.

After the first hour of the centenary running of the Le Mans 24 Hours, Toyota’s No. 8 GR010 HYBRID leads after a safety car-disrupted opening 60 minutes.

The frantic, incident-packed start to the centenary Le Mans 24 Hours continued in the second hour of the race, which is currently being led by the No. 2 Cadillac Racing V-Series.R of Earl Bamber.

We’ve now had three hours of chaotic racing at Le Mans. Hour 3 was incident-packed and featured multiple, multi-car battles for top positions in Hypercar. But they were all for nothing, as to make things even more frenetic, the hour ended with a deluge between Indianapolis and the Porsche Curves, bringing out a safety car.

The fourth hour of the Le Mans 24 Hours saw things settle down, but only because the safety car period called for rain and incidents in Hour 3 lasted the entire hour.

The biggest headline of the hour was the No. 94 Peugeot 9X8 holding the lead under safety car conditions after the most recent Hypercar pit stops early in the hour. Californian ace Gustavo Menezes’s efforts climbing the order on slick tires in the rain paid off, the French marque is an unlikely early leader in this race.

After a lengthy safety car period for heavy rain, the Le Mans 24 Hours is green and frantic once again.

Peugeot’s lead from the previous hour didn’t last long once the race resumed, as a hard-charging Yiefei Ye quickly passed the No. 94 of Gustavo Menezes in the No. 38 Hertz Team JOTA Porsche. Ye took the lead between Mulsanne Corner and the Porsche Curves after running side by side for the entire stretch in what was yet another thrilling sequence.

We’ve reached the quarter mark of the centenary running of the Le Mans 24 Hours, and in every class, it’s been a drama-filled race, with no team about to build any sort of comfortable lead through the safety car periods and rain showers.

In Hypercar, the race finally settled down somewhat, and Ferrari emerged as the true leader, its pair of 499Ps running strongly in first and second, pulling away from the chasing pack through much of the hour.

But as Hour 7 started it was the No. 75 Porsche that inherited the lead, as the two AF Corse Ferraris pitted at the end of the sixth hour. Nick Tandy is ahead of the two Ferraris, but the Briton is set to pit shortly after the start of the next hour and drop back down the order.

As it stands, it’s going well for Ferrari, and for the No. 94 Peugeot and No. 2 Cadillac. Clean runs for all four cars, with no dramas or misfortune, have put them firmly in contention as the sun sets over the circuit.

The seventh hour of the Le Mans 24 Hours brought darkness and more rain, lots of it. Another heavy rain shower, this time mainly over the pit lane and run to Tetre Rouge, caused another round of panicked pit stops for wet tires, and unfortunately more incidents.

Almost eight hours into the Le Mans 24 Hours, the race finally felt like it was settling into a rhythm before drama at the end of the hour brought us to one-third distance.

Much to almost everybody trackside’s surprise, it was Ferrari vs. Peugeot for the lead in Hypercar. The No. 51 AF Corse Ferrari led over the No. 94 Peugeot 9X8, preventing the 499P from extending its lead gap.

The ninth hour was held entirely under the safety car, while marshals cleaned up the mess from the multi-car incident at Tertre Rouge at the end of the previous hour.

As the hour began the No. 7 was formally retired, Kamui Kobayashi jumping out of the car, throwing in the towel after multiple attempts to restart his GR010. The No. 66 JMW Motorsport Ferrari also was also an on-the-spot retirement from its damage in the incident.

Nico Muller and Peugeot were in control of the 24 Hours of Le Mans after ten hours. Muller inherited the lead of the race after Ryo Hirakawa brought the No. 8 Toyota GR010 to the pits during a full course yellow period that encased the second half of the hour.

Perhaps more noteworthy, however, was the No. 50 Ferrari that was wheeled into the garage in the closing minutes of the hour. Antonio Fouco was running fourth when the car was brought in. The team set to work on the front of the car in search of a leak. The car was still in the garage at the end of the hour and is two laps down but likely to lose more.

Even at 2:18 a.m. in France, the crowd that remained on the front stretch at the Circuit de la Sarthe gave an audible cheer as the AF Corse team wheeled the No. 50 Ferrari 499P back out onto the pitlane after nearly thirty minutes of repairs to the right front brakes were completed.

Antonio Fouco remained in the car that he put on the pole earlier in the week and watched as his chances of a Le Mans victory slipped away. Eventually, he brought the 499P back to the track seven laps behind the then race-leading No. 94 Peugeot of Nico Muller.

A dejected Gustavo Menezes keyed up the radio to ask his team if they wanted him to remove the heavily damaged nose of his Peugeot 9X8 before limping back to the pits after a crash at the first chicane.

“I’m so sorry,” the American said while the field passed by him, as Peugeot joined Ferrari, Porsche, and Toyota as the next Hypercar manufacturer to encounter trouble under the cover of darkness. Menezes’ crash promoted Alex Lynn and Cadillac into third, joining Toyota’s No. 8 GR010 and Ferrari’s No. 51 499P at the fore of the Le Mans field with half of the race completed.

A crash for Cool Racing’s No. 47 ORECA 07 broke up what was an otherwise quiet hour of running at the Le Mans 24 Hours. Reshad De Gerus was running third in LMP2 when he went off at the entry into the Porsche Curves, smacking the front of the car against the tire barrier before whipping around to do even more damage to the rear.

Apart from De Gerus’ off, it was an uneventful hour as the Hypercar battle settled down with the No. 8 Toyota GR010 of Brendon Hartley in control of the race after Toyota entered its second stint on its current set of tires. The No. 2 Cadillac V-Series.R currently leads but will drop down to third once it completes its pitstop and the Toyota of Hartley will reassume the lead of the race.

The sunrise is on the horizon at the Le Mans 24 Hours as another quiet hour of running has elapsed. It’s still Toyota’s No. 8 GR010 of Brendon Hartley that leads as a three-horse race for the overall win between Toyota, Ferrari’s No. 51 499P and Cadillac’s No. 2 V-Series.R is shaping up for the final 10 hours of the race.
