Dobro jutro 🙂

The 15th hour was full of action in all three categories as we approach the two-thirds distance at the Le Mans 24 Hours.

In Hypercar, the top three remain the key contenders, with the No. 8 Toyota that has been leading getting slowly reeled in by the No. 51 AF Corse Ferrari of Alessandro Pier Guidi.

In LMP2, there was plenty to report. The main headline was the LMP2 Pro/Am leading (10th in LMP2 overall) AF Corse ORECA crashing out. Ben Barnicoat made a costly error through the Porsche Curves, the 26-year-old tapping a curb and causing the car to snap sideways, sending him flying off the circuit and into the barriers. It was an on-the-spot retirement with heavy damage to its left side.

A few laps later the battle for the lead began. With an injured ankle, Fabio Scherer somehow managed to catch and pass Robert Kubica’s No. 41 WRT ORECA for the lead.

If Hour 15 was about LMP2’s lead battle, Hour 16 was about Hypercar.

Alessandro Pier Guidi in the No. 51 Ferrari continued to reel in Ryo Hirakawa’s No. 8 Toyota in the opening laps of the hour. Hirakawa’s pace was no match for the Italian but when the pair pitted for their 19th stop of the race, they were nose to tail with the Toyota still ahead.

When Hirakawa pulled in for the stop, he it emerged that he was carrying splitter damage and a slow right-rear puncture. The team, rightly, opted to change the front end and the damaged tire before sending him on his way with another full tank of fuel.

But it would cost the No. 8 Toyota crew the lead. The No. 51 Ferrari, even with a driver and tire change, still left the pit lane in front, with James Calado given the nod to build a lead for the team.

With seven hours remaining in the 2023 Le Mans 24 Hours, the Ferrari vs Toyota battle for the overall lead is still on and it’s fierce.

Currently, the gap is 28 seconds, the No. 51 499P, now driven by Antonio Giovanazzi after a short stint from James Calado. During the hour the No. 8 closed the gap a little, Ryo Hirakawa getting it down to 19 seconds while Calado wrestled with tyre degradation issues on his rears. Since Buemi climbed in, the gap has grown again, however.

Just six hours to go and in each class it feels like we are no closer to being able to predict who will take the top honors.

The Hypercar battle between Ferrari and Toyota continues. The No. 8 Toyota is now a minute back with Sebastien Buemi at the wheel, the team losing a chunk of time at its 22nd stop due to the team changing to medium tyres.

Buemi’s pace has improved as a result of the fresh Michelin tyres being mounted, but he has been unable to take any significant chunks out of the gap to Antonio Giovanazzi in the No. 51 499P that leads with the sun out over the circuit and the crowds trackside beginning to build back up.

https://racer.com/2023/06/11/lm24-hour-19-ferrari-back-on-top-after-briefly-losing-lead-to-pit-issue/

Quote

The Hypercar lead battle reignited again during Hour 19, when the No. 51 Ferrari lost its lead to an issue in the pits.

When Antonio Giovanazzi came in for stop number 23 to hand over to Alessandro Pier Guidi, who climbed in and couldn’t get the car fired. He had to endure an agonising wait for a full power cycle to be completed before leaving his pit box.

By the time he left, the No. 8 Toyota had gone past to retake the lead on pit lane. To make matters worse, the team appears to have a radio issue. Pier Guidi can hear the pit wall, but they can’t hear him.

The lead battle is still hot at the Le Mans 24 Hours with 4 hours remaining. The No. 51 Ferrari 499P still leads but the gap is down to just 1.1 seconds after being 19 for most of the hour. The gap came down because Toyota opted to pit the No. 8 a lap early during a slow zone period, to gain time.

It worked and Brendon Hartley is right behind James Calado, who is now back aboard the leading 499P. Will the Kiwi find enough pace in his GR010 to make a pass for the lead?

Into the 22nd hour we go, and in every class this race continues to deliver the goods. The Ferrari vs Toyota battle in Hypercar is ongoing, with the leading No. 51 499P of James Calado edging away from Brendon Hartley in the No. 8 GR010 during the hour.

The gap is now 13 seconds, in part because Hartley had to deal with the No. 50 sister Ferrari of Miguel Molina, multiple laps down, putting the pressure on from behind. Brendon Hartley was asked by the team on the pit wall if he is physically capable of doing a quad stint. Without hesitation, the answer was “yes!”

Hour 22 was very much a holding hour. With two hours to go, it feels like this race is still yet to reach its crescendo. But for now, the lead battles in each category are static.

We’re into the final hour at Le Mans and all of a sudden it’s Ferrari’s race to lose. Toyota’s hopes of a sixth straight victory evaporated in the blink of an eye early in the 23rd hour, when Ryo Hirakawa ended up in the barriers at Arnage.

The 2023 Le Mans 24 Hours, the centenary edition of the event that was first run in 1923, has been won by Ferrari AF Corse’s No. 51 499P Hypercar. In a race that had everything — incidents, sudden weather changes, surprise class leaders, mechanical dramas and countless on-track battles — Antonio Giovanazzi, James Calado and Alessandro Pier Guidi survived to take a famous win at the Circuit de la Sarthe.

Acura won Motul Petit Le Mans, but it was Cadillac’s day.

After 10 hours, Pipo Derani and Alexander Sims claimed the first Drivers Championship of GTP’s new era in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, and Whelen Engineering Cadillac Racing took the team trophy. On the strength of a 12 Hours of Sebring victory and a second in the Six Hours of the Glen, Derani, Sims and Jack Aitken are the Michelin Endurance Cup champs as well. Cadillac, with the help of the Chip Ganassi Racing arm of Cadillac Racing, took the Manufacturer Championship both overall (its fourth) and for the MEC (fifth).

IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship teams have been gearing up for the 2024 season in private testing, but they’ll gather together at Daytona International Speedway next week for a four-day IMSA homologation test. While the test allows the sanctioning body to help gauge car performance and make any Balance of Performance changes — especially with the new crop of GT3 cars coming in from Ford and Chevrolet — it will be critical for the teams in preparation for the Rolex 24 At Daytona and the rest of the season.

WEC sa ovim velikim gridom za sada izgleda jako zanimljivo i definitivno će biti moj prvi izbor za praćenje autosporta u 2024. (pored MotoGP-a).
