Niels Wittich has unexpectedly stood down from his role as Formula 1’s race director.

Rui Marques, previously the Formula 2 and Formula 3 race director, will take over his role from the next round of the world championship in Las Vegas.

Ja pricam to od prvog vagona.

VW (pod bilo kojim brendom osim Porsche-a) nece nikada uci u F1. Prosto i jednostavno, sindikati i drzava su u bordu. Svaka naznaka problema (a sada imaju ozbiljan problem) znaci seci.

Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali says the world championship sets the global standard in “sport entertainment”.

Domenicali, who took charge of F1 in 2021, said the series “seems to be in another era” compared to just five years ago, shortly after Liberty Media’s takeover of F1.

He predicted the sport will continue to grow over the coming years. “If you just look back, not 30 [but] five years in Formula 1, it seems to be in another era, so I don’t know in that respect what it’s going to be,” he told Pirelli. “I want to say something that maybe is quite heavy.

“F1 will be the protagonist of the life of the people who will be there in 30 years because all the ingredients are there, the ingredients of connected people, the ingredients of the right technology to develop as an accelerator, the ingredients of talking of something that is sport, but [also] business and entertainment.

“At the end of the day, today, I can say that F1 is the biggest sport entertainment in the world and this is for sure what it will be in 30 years.”

Kome nije jasno sta to znaci:

The term sports entertainment was coined by the World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now WWE) chairman Vince McMahon during the 1980s as a marketing term to describe the industry of professional wrestling, primarily to potential advertisers, although precursors date back to February 1935, when Toronto Star sports editor Lou Marsh described professional wrestling as "sportive entertainment". In 1989, the WWF used the phrase in a case it made to the New Jersey Senate for classifying professional wrestling as "sports entertainment" and thus not subject to regulation like a directly competitive sport.

In subsequent years, WWE began to insist that its talent use "sports entertainment", and not "pro wrestling", to describe its business, to the point that the term was sometimes used in other promotions to generate heat. WWE moved away from this insistence in 2024 after Vince McMahon's departure from the company, but still uses "sports entertainment" in some contexts.

Despite its association with WWE, the term "sports entertainment" is not inherently limited to pro wrestling, and can also encompass other forms of sports-based events. Many represent variants of actual sports, such as exhibition basketball with the Harlem Globetrotters. Others modify sport for entertainment purposes, such as many of the various mascot races held at numerous Major League Baseball games in-between innings. Roller derby was presented as a popular form of sports entertainment in the 1970s, though modern versions are legitimate competition.

George Russell says drivers were surprised by the FIA’s announcement last week that race director Niels Wittich had been replaced.

The FIA said Wittich, who took over the role at the beginning of 2022, had left to pursue other opportunities. However he claimed the governing body chose to release him from his position.

Russell said the FIA did not inform or consult drivers over Wittich’s departure. “We definitely weren’t aware,” he said. “It was a bit of a surprise, I think, for everybody.”

Formula 1 drivers are still waiting for FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem’s response to the open letter they addressed to him two weeks ago.

Max Verstappen, who clashed with the FIA after its stewards penalised him for swearing in a press conference in Singapore two months earlier, made it clear the drivers intend to keep pressing their case.
