Lesser, greater, middling… Makes no difference. The degree is arbitary. The definition’s blurred. If I’m to choose between one evil and another… I’d rather not choose at all.

I sam pratim taj moto.

Pre desetak godina (možda malo manje) imao sam sreću i zadovoljstvo da mi u ruke dopadnu dve njihove knjige: Ekonomsko poreklo diktature i demokratije i potom Zašto narodi propadaju.

"The radioactivity remains deep underground - even when a meteorite is hit"

Finland built the world's first nuclear camp. Radioactive waste is to be stored here for 100,000 years.

A visit to the Onkalo cave.

Spoiler

The light of the lamps attached to the granite walls does not extend to the end of the tunnel. If you look into the underground, where the deposits are at a depth of 430 meters, you only perceive darkness everywhere. The underground cave system oncalo in the west of Finland was built to accommodate one of the most deadliest by human -made heavy metals: radioactive uranium, which is used in the five nuclear reactors of Finland, a country that depends on 40 percent on nuclear energy.

Onkalo, whose name in Finnish means "hidden cave" is the world's first depth bearing, which absorbs barrels with 90 degrees hot uranium, which are sealed with iron, copper and the sound mineral bentonite. In the next few months, these end bearing containers will be drained down into the 10 kilometer tunnels that have been dug. It should once be 50 kilometers. Here you will safely store the next 100,000 years, as Finnish geologists assure. This period corresponds to 4,000 human generations or 20 times of the time that has passed between the construction of the pyramids and today.

In 100,000 years there will probably no longer be London and Paris

We know that the hot uranium will have cooled until then. But when we ask ourselves how the earth and humanity will look until then, we look back into a black hole. «We do not assume that London, Paris or Rome will still exist at that time. It is possible that there is a new ice age and Europe is covered with a two -kilometer layer of ice, »explains Pasi Tuohimaa, communication director at Posiva, the company that disposes of nuclear waste in Finland. "We also took into account the impact of a meteorite," adds Johanna Hansen, a geologist of Posiva who has been working in the tunnels for years. "Even if the containers burst, the radioactivity would remain deeply underground."

For those who use uranium decay as a standard for time, the question of whether humanity will still exist is irrelevant. "Once onkalo has been filled and sealed, it will be left a century later," explains Tuohimaa. «We will not leave any signs or signposts. In which language should we also write it? », He asks. Someone came up with the idea of hanging up at the entrance to the “The Scream” deposit by Edvard Munch, a picture whose expression of the fear is understandable for everyone. But the idea was given up. And among geologists who dig with dusty drills, one tells the joke formulated as a question: What if the waste of earlier civilization came to light?

The Finnish population supports nuclear power Today

Onkalo is the seal of approval of a relationship with nuclear power, with which Finland is obviously very satisfied. "The nuclear waste landfill was the lack of link to make this energy source sustainable," says Tuohimaa. Helsinki also insisted that the European Union is one of the clean energy sources. At the end of 2023, the third reactor of a power plant was inaugurated in front of a natural path on the Olkiluoto island, a few hundred meters from Onkalo, in front of a natural path with a view of the Bottnian Gulf, which is the largest in Europe today. "Since the reactor was commissioned, the Russian gas crisis has no longer a problem," explains Juha Poikola, manager at Posiva. «Finland's NATO joining also alleviated the fear of a Russian attack. The roof of the Olkiluoto nuclear power plant was reinforced in order to withstand the impact of a jumbojet in the event. »

Even if nuclear power will set up a world record in production this year and, according to the international energy agency, should continue to grow by 3 percent annually, the waste problem is still insurmountable for all countries - with the exception of Finland, which started excavation in Onkalo 21 years ago and has previously spent the equivalent of around CHF 940 million. The 263,000 tons of radioactive waste, which are scattered across the entire planet, are all in intermediate camps, mostly swimming pools, which are covered with water about 10 meters high. Ultimately, onkalo will store 6500 tons, but none of them will come from abroad because the law prohibits it.

The rest of the world is still looking for locations

Only Sweden has been able to start drilling in the past few months, in the upper part of the Bottnian Gulf. Canada and France have chosen a location, but are faced with protests by residents. In 2011, after 10 years of work, the United States gave up the Yucca Mountain location in the Nevada desert because the local communities, including the indigenous people, resisted. After 15 years of effort, Italy has still not determined a location for a national nuclear waste. In contrast, protested in the approximately twenty potentially suitable areas is protested. In Switzerland, a deep camp in north of lanters from 2050 could accommodate nuclear waste. Until the warehouse can be put into operation, there are still many steps to take. There is also resistance in Switzerland.

The situation is different with Finland, where the law also grants the local authorities a veto right in relation to nuclear power. The city council of Eurajoki, a city with 9,000 inhabitants, which also includes Olkiluoto and Onkalo, voted on in 2000. "It ended with 20 votes against 7 no votes," recalls Mayor Vesa Lakaniemi. «We have been living with the power plant for over 40 years, the taxes paid by the operators cover a large part of the budget. Many of us also have a relative or friend who works there and we know how much value is placed on safety. No, there were never protests with us. » Rauma, a city of 40,000 inhabitants, which is located 20 kilometers south of Olkiluoto, also has a good relationship with nuclear power and decades of coexistence. «We trust those who manage it. They are transparent, »explains Mayor Esko Poikela. «Last year there was a problem with a cooling water valve and they informed us about every detail. Children, including my daughter, also visit the nuclear power plant on school trips. » Again, the Finnish extraordinary is shown.
