The United States will reduce funding allocated for military assistance to Ukraine in its upcoming defense budget, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said in a congressional hearing on June 10.

"It is a reduction in this budget," Hegseth told lawmakers in the U.S. House of Representatives.

"This administration takes a very different view of that conflict. We believe that a negotiated peaceful settlement is in the best interest of both parties and our nation's interests, especially with all the competing interests around the globe."

Russian overnight drone and missile attacks on Kyiv killed at least 14 people and wounded at least 55, officials said on Tuesday, in the deadliest strikes on the capital in weeks.

Of those wounded, more than 40 have been taken to hospitals, Kyiv mayor Vitaliy Klitschko said, with residential buildings and other infrastructure severely damaged.

“We hope that no dead will be found under the rubble, but we cannot rule it out,” he added.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said more than 440 drones and 32 missiles were launched at Ukraine overnight.

The strikes come as Trump announced he would return to Washington a day early from the Group of 7 summit in Canada.

His early departure means he will miss a key meeting with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky on the sidelines of the event.

Meanwhile, Russian Security Council Secretary Sergey Shoigu arrived in Pyongyang on a “special mission” from Russian leader Vladimir Putin, according to Russian state news agency TASS.

Shoigu is scheduled to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, Tass reported Tuesday.

Frontline report: German aid helps Ukraine develop hypersonic missile able to destroy bunkers deep inside Russia

Here, as Ukraine ramps up its long-range strike capabilities, a breakthrough is taking shape, with German funding powering Ukraine’s first hypersonic missile launch. Backed by a five-billion-euro defense package, Ukraine’s Hrim-2 [thunder in Ukrainian] hypersonic missile is now entering serial production, marking a bold new chapter in Ukraine’s ability to hit deep behind Russian lines.

The Hrim-2 is launched from a specialized ground vehicle that fires it into the air using a solid propellant rocket engine, before following a set ballistic trajectory towards a stationary target. The Hrim-2 has an operational range of 300 kilometers and can reach speeds of up to Mach 5.2, or nearly 1.8 kilometers per second, making it a hypersonic missile.

The 400-kilogram warhead allows for the destruction of hardened bunkers, logistics hubs, airbases, and ammunition depots, especially because these are stationary targets that are easy to trace. The capability of Hrim-2 to carry a heavy warhead for strikes within a 300-kilometer range marks a major leap forward for the Ukrainian precision strike capabilities, as the warhead is twice as big as that of Atacms, which Ukrainians were previously dependent on for similar precision strikes.

The US has halted some weapons shipments to Kyiv, the White House has said, as Russia's war against Ukraine has intensified.

The decision was taken "to put America's interests first" following a Department of Defense review of US "military support and assistance to other countries", White House spokesperson Anna Kelly said on Tuesday.

US officials did not immediately say which shipments were being halted.

The Department of Defense "continues to provide the President with robust options to continue military aid to Ukraine," said Elbridge Colby, the US Undersecretary of Defense for Policy.

A US official said the move was based on concerns about US military stockpiles falling too low, the BBC's US media partner CBS News has reported.

French President Emmanuel Macron spoke with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on Tuesday - the first time in over two-and-a-half years.

They spoke on the phone for more than two hours, Macron's office said, adding that the French president urged a ceasefire in Ukraine.

Putin hit back by blaming the West for the conflict. A Kremlin statement said Putin reminded Macron that Western countries had "for many years ignored Russia's security interests" and "created an anti-Russian bridgehead in Ukraine".

Russia welcome the US decision.

"In any case, the fewer the number of weapons that are delivered to Ukraine, the closer the end of the special military operation," Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters, using Russia's term for its more than three-year invasion of Ukraine.

A i ovih 172 milijarde prestavljaju 6,3 % BDP-a odnosno trećinu budžeta.
