At least 12 people, including three children, were killed and dozens injured in Russian drone and missile strikes, regional officials and emergency services said.

Ukraine's air force said that since 20:40 on Saturday local time (17:40 GMT), Russia had carried out strikes using 367 missiles of various types, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and drones.

The air force said it had shot down 45 cruise missiles and neutralised 266 UAVs, with most regions in Ukraine affected.

The air force recorded hits in 22 locations and downed cruise missiles and UAVs in 15 areas. The strikes mark an intensification from the previous night, when Ukraine's air force said Russia attacked with 14 ballistic missiles and 250 UAV and drones, affecting six regions.

In a pointed message to US President Donald Trump - who has previously claimed that Putin is interested in ending the war - Zelensky said: "The world may go on vacation, but the war continues, despite weekends and weekdays.

"This cannot be ignored. America's silence, and the silence of others in the world, only encourages Putin."

Ukraine’s foreign intelligence service, Gen Oleh Ivashchenko accused China of helping Russia’s war machine.

“We have information that China has been supplying tools, special chemicals and gunpowder to [Russia’s] military factories. We have confirmed data on 20 Russian factories," he says in an interview with local media, external.

"In 2024-2025, at least five instances of aviation cooperation with China have been recorded involving equipment, parts and documentation. Six large deliveries of special chemicals.

“As of early 2025, 80% of critical electronics for Russian drones are of Chinese provenance."

Finland's foreign ministry says it has summoned Russia's ambassador to explain a "suspected violation" of the country's airspace.

This is after the Finnish defence ministry reported on Friday that two Russian military aircraft were suspected of entering Finnish airspace off Porvoo, in the south of the country.

Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the latest massive aerial assaults on Ukraine are a response to Kyiv's attacks on Russian infrastructure.

“We have seen how the Ukrainians have been hitting our social infrastructure, peaceful infrastructure. This is a response strike. It’s a strike against military facilities, military targets,” he said.

Merz Gives Ukraine Green Light to Strike Deep Inside Russia

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said Ukraine has been given permission to use weapons supplied by its allies to launch strikes deep inside Russia.

“There are absolutely no range limits anymore for weapons delivered to Ukraine, not from Britain, the French or from us — also not from the Americans,” Merz said at a conference in Berlin on Monday. “That means Ukraine can defend itself by attacking military positions also in Russia.”

Democratic and Republican lawmakers are lobbying Trump to significantly ratchet up US sanctions after the weekend attacks.

“All of us, by our public statements as well as private contacts, are pressing very, very hard,” Democratic Sen. Richard Blumenthal told CNN on Monday.

Blumenthal is a key figure behind a cross-party Senate bill, also sponsored by Trump ally Sen. Lindsey Graham, which aims to impose “crippling” new measures on Moscow. It would include “secondary sanctions,” like massive 500% tariffs on countries buying Russian energy. More than 80 senators have signed on to the bipartisan bill so far.

According to Blumenthal, the cross-party bill – which could impact US adversaries like China as well as friendly Asian and European nations – was drawn up in “very extensive” consultation with US allies who may be affected by new sanctions on Russian energy imports. Germany, France and Britain are now “all for it, with 100% support,” he told CNN.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said that Russia has gathered 50,000 troops near Ukraine's northern Sumy region.

Speaking to reporters, he added Kyiv had taken steps to prevent Moscow from conducting a large-scale offensive there.

"Their largest, strongest forces are currently on the Kursk front," Zelenskyy said. "To push our troops out of the Kursk region and to prepare offensive actions against the Sumy region."

The build-up of troops comes as Russia appears to be preparing for a summer offensive in Ukraine.
