Vuky53.jpg

Quote

A jubilant Bill Vukovich after grabbing the Pole for the 1953 500 in one of the most dramatic runs in Pole Day history. He and his crew are soaked because a cloudburst opened up just as Vuky was in the fourth turn on his last lap. Chief mechanic, Jim Travers, said it was raining so hard when Vuky came off the fourth turn, that the rooster tail he was throwing obliterated the car. Typical Vuky, running on those skinny, hard tires, he didn't back off and flew under the checker in a downpour. The tall guy in the back is the 1952 500 winner, Troy Ruttman. Troy injured his arm in a sprint car race and had to set out the '53 500. A good friend of Vuky's, Troy was there to support him. Others from the left are co-chief mechanics, Frank Coon and Jim Travers, in his always-present sunglasses. Later they formed Traco Engineering.

Bill Vukovich II, the 1968 Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year and a member of one of the race’s most prominent families, died on August 20. He was 79.

Vukovich was the son of two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Bill Vukovich and the father of fellow Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year Billy Vukovich III. The Vukovichs were one of only five families to have three generations of drivers compete in “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing,” joining the Unsers, Andrettis, Foyts and Brabhams.

Motorsports brought Vukovich much acclaim, but the sport also took a tragic toll on his family. His father, Bill Vukovich, died from injuries suffered in an accident while leading the 1955 Indianapolis 500 as he was trying to win the race for an unprecedented third consecutive year. Bill Vukovich II’s son, 1988 Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year Billy Vukovich III, also suffered fatal injuries during practice for a sprint car race in November 1990 at Bakersfield, California.
