Meni je i dalje neverovatno da je proslo cetvrt veka a da se i dalje secam tog dana kao da je bio juce...i onog groznog predosecaja koji sam imao to jutro, i same trke, i komentatotra kako prica da je sampionat izgubljen ako ne bude uspeo da se oporavi do sledece trke, a oko bolida neka lokva koja deluje kao lokva krvi i ne sluti da ce se ikad vratiti...i na kraju pregleda italijanse lige koji je isao u 19 casova i koji je poceo tuznim obavestenjem da nas je Sena zauvek napustio...krenuse mi suze i dok ovo pisem...zbog njega sam zavoleo F1, trkanje uopste, bio je heroj mog detinjstva...

A quarter of a century after Ayrton Senna’s death at Imola in the San Marino Grand Prix, May 1, 1994 remains a day when he is revered the world over.

 

You can only imagine what social media would have been like back in 1994, but scroll through your feed today and you’re bound to find multiple images and tributes to one of the greatest ever.

 

I’ll admit, I always find it difficult to write about Senna, because I was never truly aware of him during his lifetime. I was just five when he died, and was kept away from the television the day it happened because my parents thought I was too young to see what was going on.

 

But the man is inescapable. In 2014 I attended a special memorial event held at Imola to mark 20 years since his passing along with that of Roland Ratzenberger, who lost his life on the same weekend. There wasn’t really any more I could learn from a distance about what had happened or the men that either of them were, but the sheer number of people turning out showed just how brightly memories of both still shone.

 

Their legacy is not only a much safer sport – one in which Formula 1 drivers regularly walk away from accidents that in the past would have proven fatal – but Senna still provides the inspiration to so many drivers, including one the Brazilian’s former teammate Gerhard Berger now ranks on the same level as the three-time world champion.

 

“Wow … Gerhard got to race alongside him and was a really good friend of his,” Lewis Hamilton said upon being told of Berger’s recent comments. “So that said means a lot coming from him, someone who knew him so well, and it’s quite humbling to be put even in the same sentence as someone like him.

 

“For me, Ayrton is always in his own light, and he’s always on his own unique level that as a driver you just aspire to emulate or be like. He was the driver that inspired me as a kid. Still, a hero today, and will always be.

“I didn’t really know his personality so much, so it’s more what he stood for and what he stood up against and what he was able to do in a car that I loved to see.”

 

It’s not just Hamilton who lists Senna as an inspiration: younger drivers often reference the Brazilian when asked about their heroes in the sport.

 

“I’m sure they watched some of his races online or on videos or whatever,” Hamilton says. “I grew up watching videos. He’s the most iconic driver. He was an iconic individual, a real leader and a master of his craft.”

 

But Hamilton does himself a disservice, because his own idolization of Senna also enhances his legacy. At 34, Hamilton is now the same age that Senna was when he lost his life, and has passed him in terms of championships, race wins and pole positions. But Hamilton has 71 more entries to his name, and – as the Briton is now – Senna was still in his prime at that age.

 

For young drivers coming through the ranks, aspiring to be Formula 1 World Champion one day, Hamilton is currently the benchmark. And if that benchmark references Ayrton Senna as his inspiration, those drivers are going to look at what Senna was all about.

 

Thanks to the aforementioned social media, that is so much easier to do today. Google ‘Ayrton Senna’ and you’ll find so many articles today (including this one, somewhere) on a variety of aspects of his life and death.

 

It’s almost easier to get to know Senna now than it was when he was racing. We might no longer have the privilege of watching him do special things with a car in real time, but we are able to understand just how he had an impact on so many people, in so many ways. And from that, his legacy will always remain intact.

 

If he continues to inspire current and future heroes for fans, then Senna will remain a hero to future generations too. To still be one long after he’s gone is perhaps the greatest testament to exactly who Ayrton Senna da Silva was, whether you ever saw him race or not.

Pat Symonds, Executive Director of Engineering (Ayrton's first race engineer with Toleman in 1984) : Dallas was what I would call an ‘old-fashioned’ North American street circuit, delineated with concrete blocks. It was a very tricky circuit, and bumpy enough to make even Monaco look smooth: the drivers literally had to fight their cars all the way round as they skipped and jumped from bump to bump. I remember during the race, Ayrton hit the wall, and then later retired because of the damage. When he eventually made it back to the pits, he didn’t seem to understand how he could have hit the wall. It seemed to come as a complete shock to him that he had hit the wall, and his immediate reaction was “I know I didn’t make a mistake – the wall must have moved.” Remember, we were talking about a twenty tonne concrete block here, but he was so insistent that he persuaded me to walk round the circuit and take a look. When I did so, the wall had indeed moved – somebody had clearly clipped the previous block and in doing so, displaced the next one by only about 4cm. Instead of the transition from block to block being smooth, a 4cm difference had caught the rear wheel, broken it and punctured the tyre. That was when it really came home to me, the precision to which he was driving, and made me think he was a bit special… And remember this was a guy in his first season of F1, straight out of F3…,
Sećam se naslova u slovenačkom Auto Magazinu ´83. „Momak koji obara sve rekorde“ . Senna je te godine u F3 pobedio 11od 14 trka. Neponovljeno.

Krajem osamdesetih i devedesetih u bivsoj nam zemlji SFRJ su prenosene samo trke u Evrpi. Tada je malo koja kuca imala vise od jednog TV, bila je prava borba doci do mogucnosti da se gledaju trke. Posebno ako je plan matorih bio da se ide na vikendice gde vrlo cesto nije imalo ni struje, to naravno tada nije bilo ni moguce. Tako, da sam mnoge trke nazalost propustao, posebno van Evrope. Evo jednog klipa sa jedne od njih iz vremena surove dominacije Williamsa sa Menslom za volanom.

 

Sjajan duel dve legende. Koliko je tada Williams sa aktivnim ogibljenjem bio dominatan, svedoci podatak da je Mensl te sezone oborio Senin rekord iz '88 sa najvise pobeda u sezoni sa cak 9 trijumf (Sena je ''88 trijumfovao na 8 trka). Te godine je Mensl ostvario cak 14 pol pozicija od 16 trka. Zaista neverovatan bolid, a na ovom snimku vidi se koliko je Sena davao sve od sebe da ga prestigne. Sjajan duel se zavrsio kontaktom i izletanjem oba vozaca, a telemetrija je pokazala da je Mensl pre krivine i kontakta ranije prikocio nego sto se ocekuje i zaradio opomenu. Mene pored duela fascinira lepota ova dva bolida, pogledajte samo linije i jednostavnost. O zvuku motora ne treba ni trositi reci, savrsenstvo.

Covek zbog koga sam klinac (tek osnovac) poceo da gledam trke. Zbog istog sam nastavio da gledam F1 a to me je posle uvelo u svet WRC-a, 24H Le Mans-a, Dakara, MotoGP-a....gledao sam tragicnu trku sa bakom koja je isto volela Aertona i gledala nekada sa mnom F1. Ne zna se ko je vise plakao tog dana....same trke se ni ne secam nesto, vise emocija tog dana. Kuca nam je bila u zalosti. Dugo sam bio u uverenju da su ga pogresna pravila i gume (na koje se zalio navodno) dovele do tragicnog ishoda.

 

Uvek mi je bio simpatican ovaj klip u mokasinama kako je vozio NSX ;)

Ja sam imao srece, mi smo vikendom isli sa sela u grad, u Novi Sad kod kevinih. A deda je fanatisao za dve stvari - FK Vojvodinu i za auto-trke, pa je nedelja za njega bila svetinja uz vreme sporta i razonode i u retkim prilikama kada bi (poznih 70-tih) bio prenos neke F1 trke. Neka od mojih najranijih secanja su kako sedim dedi u krilu i na malom crno-belom TV gledamo trke.
Moj drugi deda, sa caletove strane na selu, je bio mehanicar i svojevremeno trkac na dva tocka, on je bio pretplacen na Auto-Moto Reviju i ja sam to fascinirano prelistavao i gledao slike trkackih automobila jos i pre nego sto sam naucio da citam (a i to je bilo rano, dobrano pre skole, jer sam dosadjivao babi da mi cita stripove i Reviju pa me zena naucila da mogu sam 🙂). Uvek sam bio vise naklonjen 4 nego 2 tocka, sad kad razmisljam o tome verovatno su me tako i usmeravali jer posle dede i moj tata se nesto pokusavao baviti moto-trkama dok nije doziveo tesku nesrecu koja ga je bacila u komu i zbog koje je do kraja zivota vukao posledice.
No, jedno su svi znali - kad sam bio klinac, ako su hteli da budem miran i da znaju gde ce da me nadju morao je neki motor da bruji. Pa tako kad nisam bio kod dede u radionici (cemu se mama svaki put "obradovala" jer bih se umazao od glave do pete) druga opcija je bila da me posednu pred televizor na kome su bili neki automobili, da li trke ili film sa nekom jurnjavom. Tako da nije bilo frke u nedeljna popodneva sta ce se gledati na TV - valjda je mojima to bio jedini nacin da imaju malo mira u kuci pored mene onakvog.🤣

Prva stvar koje se secam u vezi F1 je bio Laudin udes na Nirburgringu. Deda (novosadski) je navijao za Laudu i Ferari pa je i meni on bio omiljen - i secam se kako sam smarao kevu svaki dan pitanjima o cika-Laudi, pa hoce li ozdraviti, pa kad ce ozdraviti i tako to.
Prva fatalna nesreca u F1 koju sam registrovao bio je Petersonov udes u Monci - secam se clanka iz Revije sa sve shemom gde su bili Patreze, Hant, Peterson, Brambila, i kako je za sve kriv starter koji je pokrenuo trku dok jos poslednji redovi nisu stali na grid.
Prva sezona F1 koje se secam u detalje bila je 1982 - Laudin povratak, fajt Pike-Salazar u Hokenhajmu, udes Vilneva, Kekeova titula sa samo jednom pobedom osvojena sa bodom u poslednjoj trci sezone. Toliko mi je to urezano u secanje da znam tacno gde sam bio i kako sam sedeo kad sam gledao te trke.
Da ne bude bas skroz oftopik ovo moje pisanije, Senu sam prvi put registrovao u Monaku '84. Trku sam gledao kod babe i dede (seoskih), u "velikoj" gostinskoj sobi gde smo privremeno stanovali dok smo rusili staru kucu nabijenicu i zidali novu modernu. Nas TV u boji (ne dedin crno-beli koji je bio u njihovoj "maloj" sobi) ali antena nesto nije bila dobro podesena pa je slika bila crno-bela s puno snega. Ja tada jos uvek navijac Laude pre svega, Meklaren je posle dosao po inerciji, ali sam posle Laudine konacne peznije Senu u Lotusu uvek drzao na oku. Niko srecniji od mene kad su se 1988. spojili. Nikome zalije nego kad je 1994. odlucio da promeni tim i to bas u Vilijams da ode. I onda jos ta jebena Imola.

Posle Sene od vozaca sam samo jos za Hakinena navijao. Samo tim.

Ti si Radoje ocigledno imao vise srece od mene. Mene niko nije razumeo sta ja to gledam, samim tim nisu ni fermali moje kukumavkanje. Kad je moglo, gledao sam. Inace, mene je na f1 navukao moj teca, koji je doduse navijao za Prosta. Meni je za srce prirastao Sena sa onim crnim bolidom Lotusa i brojem 12. Tako ga najranije pamtim, kasnije kad je presao u Mclaren, zaljubio sam se u crveno bele bolide. Dan danas su mi  ti bolidi od  MP4/4, pa nadalje najlepsi u f1, zato sam se i vezao za Mclaren. Posle Sene sam pratio Kimija, al ne verujem da cu se vise vezivati za vozace. No, da ni ja ne odem previse u off...
