  1. USA Today After President Joe Biden's shaky performance at the debate with former President Donald Trump on Thursday night, some Democrats openly questioned whether he should be replaced as their candidate for the 2024 election. There is a process for doing so, but it would be messy. For answers on how that would work, Reuters spoke to Elaine Kamarck, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution think tank, a Democratic National Committee member, and author of the book "Primary Politics" about the presidential nominating process. The Democratic Party has had no real Plan B for Biden as its presidential candidate. He ran virtually unopposed for the party's presidential nomination this year. He will not be nominated officially until later this summer, so there is still time to make a change and a handful of scenarios to enact one: Biden could decide himself to step aside before he is nominated; he could be challenged by others who try to win over the delegates he has accrued; or he could withdraw after the Democratic convention in Chicago in August, leaving the Democratic National Committee to elect someone to run against Trump in his place.
  2. bbc Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has renewed his appeal for more long-range weapons and air defences after a missile attack killed seven people including two children. The Russian attack on the town of Vilniansk, near the southeastern city of Zaporizhzhia, also injured 31 others, Ukrainian officials said. In total, at least 11 civilians were killed and a further 37 wounded in missile attacks across Ukraine on Saturday, Reuters reported. "Our cities and communities suffer daily from such Russian strikes," Mr Zelensky wrote in a post on Telegram. But he added that there were "ways to overcome this", including "destroying Russian missile launchers, striking with real long-range capability and increasing the number of modern air defence systems". He posted images from Vilniansk showing a large crater near a smouldering building, as well as several bodies laid out on the ground.

  4. Reuters Two key advisers to Donald Trump have presented him with a plan to end Russia's war in Ukraine - if he wins the presidential election - that involves telling Ukraine it will only get more U.S. weapons if it enters into peace talks. The United States would at the same time warn Moscow that any refusal to negotiate would result in increased U.S. support for Ukraine, retired Lieutenant General Keith Kellogg, one of Trump's national security advisers, said in an interview. Under the plan drawn up by Kellogg and Fred Fleitz, who both served as chiefs of staff in Trump's National Security Council during his 2017-2021 presidency, there would be a ceasefire based on prevailing battle lines during peace talks. They have presented their strategy to Trump, and the former president responded favorably, Fleitz said. "I'm not claiming he agreed with it or agreed with every word of it, but we were pleased to get the feedback we did," he said. The proposal would mark a big shift in the U.S. position on the war and would face opposition from European allies and within Trump's own Republican Party. According to their research paper, Moscow would also be coaxed to the table with the promise of NATO membership for Ukraine being put off for an extended period. A lasting peace in Ukraine would require additional security guarantees for Ukraine, Kellogg and Fleitz said. Fleitz added that "arming Ukraine to the teeth" was likely to be a key element of that. "President Trump has repeatedly stated that a top priority in his second term will be to quickly negotiate an end to the Russia-Ukraine war," Trump spokesperson Cheung said.
  5. bbc Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has dimissed a top general after public criticism about excessive casualties and accusations of incompetence. Lt Gen Yuriy Sodol had been in the post of commander of the Joint Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine since earlier this year. Brig-Gen Andriy Hnatov has now been appointed in his stead. Mr Zelensky did not give a reason for his decision, which he announced during his nightly video address on Monday. However, only hours before, the chief of staff of the Azov Brigade, Maj Bohdan Krotevych, filed a complaint to the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI), alleging that Gen Sodol "had more Ukrainian soldiers killed than any Russian general".

  8. Posle novog teroristickog napada u Dagestanu Ruski zvanicnici optuzuju Ukrajnu i NATO bbc In a video posted on Telegram, the republic's head, Sergei Melikov, implied Ukraine had been involved in the attack and that Dagestan was now directly involved in Russia's war in Ukraine. "We understand who is behind the organisation of the terrorist attacks and what goal they pursued," he said. The head of the Russian State Duma's international affairs committee, Leonid Slutsky, put forward similar claims, saying that the Dagestan attacks and a missile strike which killed four in Russia-occupied Sevastopol on Sunday "could not be a coincidence". "These tragic events, I am sure, were orchestrated from abroad and are aimed at sowing panic and dividing the Russian people," Mr Slutsky said.
  9. DW French far-right leader Jordan Bardella said he supports Ukraine's right to defend itself against Russia. He said, however, that if he were elected prime minister, he would not provide Kyiv with missiles that would allow it to strike Russia's territory. "I wish for Ukraine to have at disposal the ammunition and equipment it needs to hold the front, but my red line will not change, which is sending equipment that could have consequences of escalation in eastern Europe," Bardella told reporters.
  10. Sa sastanka g7 Joe Biden “We have acquired commitment from five countries, so far, for Patriot batteries and other air defense systems — as well as we’ve let it be known for those countries that are expecting, from us, air defense systems in the future, that they’re going to have to wait. Everything we have is going to go to Ukraine until their needs are met. And then we will make good on the commitments we made to other countries,” Biden said. Volodymyr Zelensky “I had phone conversation with the leader of China, by phone. He said that he will not sell any weapon to Russia,” Zelensky said. “We’ll see. … If he is respectable person, he will not. Because he gave me (his) word.”
  12. DW Ukrainian air defense forces say they shot down five out of six missiles and all 24 drones launched by Russia in an overnight attack. All five missiles aimed at the capital Kyiv, including a hypersonic Kinzhal missile, were shot down, according to Ukrainian Air Force commander Mykola Oleshchuk, while one Iskander ballistic missile did get through in the south of the country. The US will provide Ukraine with another Patriot missile system, The New York Times and the Associated Press reported citing officials familiar with the matter. President Joe Biden has approved the deployment of the Patriot system, the officials said, but an official announcement is yet to be made. This would be the second Patriot system supplied by the US to Kyiv following Russia's invasion of full-scale Ukraine in 2022.

  15. DW German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has opened the Ukraine Recovery Conference in Berlin with an appeal for more to be done to bolster Ukraine's air defense in the face of Russian attacks. "I would like to make a heartfelt plea to everyone here today: please support our initiative to strengthen Ukraine's air defense with everything that is possible," Scholz said. Scholz also told conference participants that Russia would not win the war, and he called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to "end his brutal campaign and withdraw his troops." "There will be no military victory and no dictated peace," Scholz said.
  16. I meni se cini da to nije slucajno.

  19. bbc The Kremlin leader said he did not rule out changes to Russia’s nuclear doctrine: the document which sets out the conditions under which Russia would use nuclear weapons. “This doctrine is a living tool and we are carefully watching what is happening in the world around us and do not exclude making changes to this doctrine. This is also related to the testing of nuclear weapons.” And he delivered a warning to those European countries who’ve been supporting Ukraine: Russia’s has “many more [tactical nuclear weapons] than there are on the European continent, even if the United States brings theirs over.” “Europe does not have a developed [early warning system],” he added. “In this sense they are more or less defenceless.”
  20. cnn US President Joe Biden has apologized to his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky for the delay earlier this year in passing a new military aid package, which was held up by Republican opposition in Congress. Biden made the apology while announcing a new aid package for Ukraine in a bilateral meeting with Zelensky on Friday. “You know, you haven't bowed down, you haven't yielded at all, you continue to fight in a way that is just remarkable, is just remarkable—and we’re not going to walk away from you,” Biden told the Ukrainian president.
