Pocivaj u miru

Jbg, mala bara puno krokodila.

The chair of Motorsport UK says he is dissatisfied with the FIA’s response to concerns he raised in a letter last month threatening legal action.

David Richards published an open letter last month warning the FIA they “will be engaging in further legal action” if his concerns over the use of a “gagging order” were not addressed. The Motorsport UK chair revealed he and other members were barred from a World Motor Sport Council meeting for refusing to sign a new confidentiality agreement.

Robert Reid, the FIA’s deputy president for sport who backed Mohammed Ben Sulayem’s successful bid for election in 2021, has resigned.

In a statement issued via social media Reid said the sport’s governing body “no longer reflects” his desire for “greater transparency, stronger governance, and more collaborative leadership.”

Carlos Sainz Jnr put himself at risk of incurring a further fine from the FIA after he was told to pay a €10,000 (£8,500) sanction last weekend.

The Williams driver was fined €20,000, half of which was suspended, for arriving late to the pre-race performance of the national anthem at the Japanese Grand Prix.

Fines for swearing and other infringements are a major bone of contention between drivers and the FIA. Two months ago Sainz became a director of the Grand Prix Drivers Association which has challenged FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem’s insistence on fining drivers for swearing.

Sainz deliberately put himself at risk of a further fine by swearing when asked for his views on his fine during the official FIA pre-race press conference at Suzuka today.

“I don’t know if I’m going to get another fine for saying this, but shit happens,” said the Williams driver.

Who had it on their bingo card that it would bet the fifth race of the season when Max Verstappen’s driving would come under scrutiny?

To be fair to Verstappen, it wasn’t for something wild or reckless, or that overly impacted another driver’s potential race result in the end, but it was very much about his interpretation of the rules, and the fact that both he and Red Bull felt particularly hard done by, despite what appears to be generally widespread acceptance that the stewards made the right call.

In choosing not to return the position to Piastri, Verstappen weighed two alternatives. Either drop behind Piastri and spend the opening stint in the McLaren’s wake, or accept the inevitable penalty but spend the opening stint in free air. He opted for the latter.

This should give the stewards pause for thought. If a penalty is so lenient a driver prefers it over complying with the rules, it’s insufficient.
