Ahead of the FIA WEC weekend in Imola, reports emerged that a new rule mandating two cars for each Hypercar manufacturer from the 2025 season onwards was under consideration.

RACER believes a vote on this is looming, leaving the current and future single-car OEMs in the FIA WEC working hard on solutions should they be required to expand their programs going forward to continue racing in the championship, and crucially the Le Mans 24 Hours.

Drivers and teams seemed to be in universal agreement that it couldn’t be done – that nobody could go the full race on a single set of tires as Porsche Penske Motorsports did last year to win in Long Beach. The No. 01 Cadillac Racing crew was of a different mind.

The No. 7 Toyota GR010 HYBRID of Mike Conway, Nyck de Vries and Kamui Kobayashi scored an impressive victory in Sunday’s 6 Hours of Imola, fighting through rain showers in the final third of the race, creating an enthralling strategic battle between Toyota, Porsche and Ferrari.

The two factory Ferrari 499Ps set the pace in the first practice session of the FIA WEC weekend in Spa-Francorchamps, with the No. 50 ending up over a second clear of the rest of the field following a flying lap from Antonio Fuoco.

There should be a lot more to come from the Hypercars in pace terms though. Fuoco’s time, a 2m05.690s, is way off off last year’s pole time of 2m00.812s from Toyota. It was, however, 1.1s faster than Antonio Giovanazzi in the No. 51 sister car and 1.3s up on the Lamborghini Iron Lynx SC63, which set a highly encouraging 2m06.998s to go third overall and quickest of the LMDh cars in the field.

Jota secured the first ever victory for a privateer hypercar team in the WEC by winning a disrupted Six Hours of Spa.

The number 12 Jota Porsche of Callum Ilott, Will Stevens and Norman Nato secured their team’s first overall victory in the hypercar era of WEC.

The number six Penske Porsche of Kevin Estre, Andre Lotterer and Laurens Vanthoor finished second, 12 seconds behind, with the number 50 Ferrari of Antonio Fuoco, Miguel Molina and Nicklas Nielsen in third, just ahead of the number 51 Ferrari.

The newly repaved WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, with more grip and much less tire degradation than before, provided IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship teams the ability to try a variety of tire strategies in the Motul Course de Monterey Powered by Hyundai N. Some took tires at every opportunity, some tried only right-side tires on the predominantly left-turn circuit, and some even took no tires. Two teams attempted the latter on the final stop, and what worked for the No. 6 Porsche Penske Motorsport 963 had disastrous effect for the No. 01 Cadillac Racing V-Series.R.

The victory for Mathieu Jaminet and Nick Tandy in the No. 6 Porsche Penske Motorsport Porsche 963 was the 600th victory in IMSA competition for Porsche, and was followed seconds later by the 601st as AO Racing won GTD PRO in the No. 77 911 GT3 R with Seb Priaulx and Laurin Heinrich. The milestone victories occurred, rather fittingly, at the track where the sports car manufacturer held its celebration of its history, Rennsport Reunion 6, a few months ago. It came on the heels of a World Endurance Championship win for the Hertz JOTA Porsche 963, the first privateer Hypercar victory, at the 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps the day before.

For Roger Penske, who won as a driver at Laguna Seca in the ’60s, it was the 100th global sports car victory as a team. Within those 100 race wins are many with Porsche, including the mighty 917/30s in Can-Am competition and the more recent RS Spyder in the American Le Mans Series.

On a tight street course where passing was considered to be at an absolute premium, Ricky Taylor proved it was possible in scooting past Mathieu Jaminet to deliver not only the first victory for the No. 10 Wayne Taylor Racing with Andretti Acura ARX-06 of the season, but the first GTP victory for Taylor and Filipe Albuquerque. For the team that had gone without a win in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship since 2022, claiming the Chevrolet Sports Car Classic in the first IMSA race on the downtown Detroit street circuit was an emotional occasion.

For full-time IndyCar drivers, the stretch from April to July is punishing, with seven races on the calendar to get through, headlined by the series’ crown jewel event, the Indy 500.

But it seems that’s not enough track time for a handful of them, including defending champion Alex Palou. The Spaniard, along with Scott Dixon, Romain Grosjean, Nolan Siegel and Kyffin Simpson are squeezing a week at Le Mans into their packed schedule and traveled to France directly after the XPEL Grand Prix at Road America. Anyone looking for proof that racing is an addiction should look no further…

For his Le Mans debut, Palou will drive the No. 2 Cadillac V-Series.R with the GM brand’s full-season WEC duo of Earl Bamber and Alex Lynn.

A static model of Mission H24 project’s brand new prototype, the H24EVO, was presented to the public for the first time on Wednesday at the Circuit de La Sarthe’s dedicated Hydrogen Village.

The H24EVO, which will run with a brand new gas-powered 300 kw Symbio multi-stack fuel cell, is the third prototype developed by the Mission H24 program, and is expected to turn a wheel for the first time next year.

Toyota Gazoo Racing’s No. 8 GR010 HYBRID emerged as the quickest Hypercar during the second practice session of Le Mans race week tonight. Sebastien Buemi topped the 120-minute run into darkness, with a 3:27.474 tour of the French circuit.

The Swiss driver’s hot lap bookended a rollercoaster day for the Toyota team, which topped Free Practice 1, then failed to get either GR010 HYBRID into the Hyperpole shootout during Qualifying prior to FP2.

The grid for the 2024 24 Hours of Le Mans this weekend should look very familiar to IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship fans. Fourteen teams that regularly feature in IMSA competition are competing in the race, and nearly 100 drivers that have made an appearance in IMSA competition in recent years are taking part.

Hertz Team JOTA has been forced to source and build up a replacement chassis for its No. 12 Porsche 963 entry after Callum Ilott’s crash at the end of Free Practice 2 on Wednesday night.

The new chassis is believed to have come from Porsche Penske, and was being prepped on when RACER visited the garage first thing this morning.

With Hyperpole fast approaching, it was Ferrari’s turn to top a session, Antonio Fuoco posting a 3m27.263s in the No. 50 499P at the end of Free Practice 3 on Thursday afternoon.

As a whole, it was a quiet but highly productive three hours of action, with no blistering times and the majority of teams focusing on race set-up and long-run pace.

With both Toyotas and two of the three factory Porsches failing to make it through to Hyperpole shootout on Thursday evening, it’s fair to say that there’s been plenty to talk about and keep an eye on during the second day of track action at Le Mans.

Porsche Penske Motorsport’s No. 6 963 will start the 92nd edition of the Le Mans 24 Hours this weekend from pole position after a masterful performance in the Hyperpole shootout on Thursday night from Kevin Estre.

The best lap from the Frenchman, a 3m24.634s, came at the end of the session and saw him vault ahead of the two Ganassi-run Cadillacs, which briefly sat 1-2 at the top of the timing screens.

Estre’s pole-clinching tour, set on medium compound Michelins in tricky overcast conditions, was 0.148s clear of the quickest of the two Cadillacs – the No. 2 – which was steered by Alex Lynn. The lap secured Estre his first overall WEC pole at Le Mans, and Porsche’s 18th.

The combination of heavy rainfall and poor visibility has kept the 24 Hours of Le Mans under the Safety Car for the last hour, so there’s been no major change in the running order with 11 hours left.

The No.8 Toyota Gazoo Racing GR010 HYBRID continues to lead with Brendon Hartley at the wheel, circulating behind the safety car with the No.6 Porsche Penske Motorsport 963 of Kevin Estre right behind him.

Eleven cars are on the lead lap in the Hypercar class, with the No.7 Toyota, the No.50 Ferrari AF Corse 499P, and the privateer No.83 AF Corse Ferrari rounding out the top five.
