One should never be led into thinking that lap times in the early days of winter testing are worth anything, but the first day of F1’s six days in Barcelona resulted in a Mercedes F1 1-2, with Sergio Perez third fastest in a Racing Point that looks a lot like a pink Mercedes. So much so, in fact, that there was a lot of grumbling in the paddock about the relationship between the two teams.

To be fair, it is not so very different from the Ferrari-Haas or Red Bull Racing-Alpha Tauri relationships…

However, that was not really the story of the day. What stood out was the fact that the 10 teams collectively completed an astounding 1,355 laps, which equates to 3,918 miles of running, or 20 cars completing the full Spanish Grand Prix race distance – straight out of the box. There wasn’t a red flag all day. No-one even ran their cars out of fuel at the end of the day. It was all about data, data, data.

Mercedes ran both drivers and completed a total of 173 laps, which was five more than Max Verstappen did in his Red Bull. Carlos Sainz racked up 161 laps for McLaren, while Alfa Romeo did 138 laps, split between Robert Kubica and Antonio Giovinazzi, Williams completed 136 laps, shared between George Russell and Nicholas Latifi, and Charles Leclerc, who jumped in the car in the morning after Sebastian Vettel called off sick, did 132 laps. The lowest total was Haas F1 with 105 laps, four less than Racing Point.

To put things into perspective, last year the first day of testing saw nine teams (Williams being absent) recording just 886 laps.

And the lap times were way quicker, aided by the fact that the weather in Catalunya was mild. Lewis Hamilton best run, on the hard Pirelli tyres, was a 1m16.976s, which was 1.185secs faster than Vettel’s best 2019 first day lap.

There were no real incidents with Verstappen having a couple of spins, without any serious damage.

@alpiner

Neverovatno. :ajme:

Ferrari was running low power engine modes & high fuel loads all day, according to our information. So lap times are not representative.

After an astonishing day of reliability in Barcelona on Wednesday, when the F1 teams covered 1,355 laps (3,918 miles) of running on the first day of running, the second day proved to be even more extraordinary as the total running went up to 1,369 laps in the day (3,958 miles). This means that the 10 teams have completed more than 40 Grand Prix distances between them in the first two days of testing.

This time only one of the 10 teams ran less than 100 laps (Renault having managed just 93), while Mercedes led the way again with 183 laps completed giving the team a total of 356 laps in two days, more than 1,000 miles of testing. On the second day Haas completed 158 laps, followed by AlphaTauri with 147, Racing Point with 144, McLaren with 137, Alfa Romeo and Red Bull Racing, both with 134. Ferrari managed 122 laps and Williams 116.

At the moment the lap times are still largely irrelevant but it was Kimi Raikkonen who went fastest in the Alfa Romeo before bringing out the first red flag of the tests in the final minutes of the second day.

The key point is that no-one seems to be suffering unduly. Most of the teams seem to be happy with the way things are going. The times don’t seem to be too widely spread but no-one really knows who is where in the pecking order. Most teams are still saying positive things about their cars, with Ferrari – which has kept a pretty low profile – reporting that the car is much more manageable than last year, with a much bigger set-up window.

There has been a lot of talk about the Racing Point, which looks very similar to the Mercedes, although the rules allow this as long as the Silverstone team has not taken aerodynamic data from Mercedes.

“There has been no transfer of information,” said the team’s Andy Green. “Mercedes would never have contemplated it and we would never ask for it. That is outside the regulations.”

That does not detract from the fact that the cars look very similar, but that is what the rules now allow.

There was a lot of talk during the day of a new system that Mercedes is testing, which allows the drivers to slide the steering wheel backwards and forwards and by doing so alter the toe-in of the car. No-one is quite sure what the benefits of this are but it seems to be designed to make the tyre heating more uniform but may also have benefits in terms of straightline speed. The team is also using a unique new rear suspension.

KMag otres'o Hasa o ogradu, navodno pukla guma.

Najbrze vreme dana do sada Botasovo 1:15.732. :classic_ohmy:
