NBA 2020/2021 - Lejkersi b2b ili neko drugi???
kironepraktičar replied to Miki28 Lakers in 5's topic in Košarka

‘I’m here sitting at the top of the top’: Giannis’ championship drive was part fable, all powerful David Aldridge 4h ago The thing about fairy tales, of course, is their audacity, their stretching of reality. And, indeed, NBA championships are the stuff of fairy tales. So very much has to go right for them to occur that it’s hard to keep track of it all. Think of everything that had to fall into place for Giannis Antetokounmpo to be on that stage Tuesday night, cradling the Larry O’Brien Trophy and the Bill Russell Finals MVP Award like they were Gatorade bottles in his hands, after going for 50 points, 14 rebounds and 5 blocks in the Bucks’ 105-98 win over the Phoenix Suns to secure the franchise’s first title in 50 years. First, he had to somehow first navigate a life in which he and his brothers were on the streets of Athens, Greece, unseen and uncared about by many of his fellow Athenians because his family was of Nigerian descent. Think of their fight, over years, simply to be recognized as Greek citizens. Then he had to take up and master enough basketball as a teenage boy that he could be drafted in the first round in 2013 by a team in a midwestern city in the United States whose citizens couldn’t pronounce his name. “My mom was selling stuff in the street,” he said after dropping that 50-burger. “And now, I’m here sitting at the top of the top. And I’m extremely blessed. I’m extremely blessed. If I never have a chance to sit at this table ever again, I’m fine with it. But, like, I hope this can give everyone around the world hope, and allow them to believe in their dreams.” Think of the 180 Antetokounmpo’s presence — his joy — being in Milwaukee was from five decades ago, when Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who’d won everywhere he’d played the game his entire life, said Milwaukee just wasn’t providing him enough cultural stimulus for him to be comfortable in the city — even though he’d won a championship there in just his second season in the league. And how painful that must have been for the Bucks general manager at the time, the first Black man in league history to get a GM job, Wayne Embry. Milwaukee is, still, harshly segregated. And the pain of the past flares up in the city in awful ways. Former Buck Sterling Brown just finalized his settlement with the city in April, which paid him $750,000 following a 2018 incident with police in which Brown was confronted by an officer after parking across two parking spots outside a Walgreens. Multiple police officers tackled and tased Brown after he didn’t comply with their requests. The city also had to apologize to Brown. Brown left town, but the franchise’s commitment to social justice, to look outside the court and become more engaged in the community, intensified. There’s no title if Jon Horst doesn’t become the team’s GM in 2017. And Horst only became the GM after the Bucks weren’t able to get Artūras Karnišovas, now the Bulls GM, from Utah, and opted to promote from within. “I think in a long-term view, ‘championship or bust’ is our mantra,” Horst said to me in his first year at the helm. “We fully intend to be a team that competes for championships for a long period of time, and hopefully wins championships. We want to do that. … Between that stage and a championship is a lot of really critical and important steps. You have a short window, and you want to maximize every part of that window.” Horst hired Mike Budenholzer as coach in 2018, and retooled the roster around Antetokounmpo and Khris Middleton, adding Brook Lopez and Pat Connaughton. Then, in November, Horst pushed all his chips in, getting Jrue Holiday from New Orleans. There was urgency in his moves, an urgency felt up and down the flow chart. But Horst’s work helped convince Antetokounmpo to eschew free agency this year and commit to a supermax deal with the Bucks. Giannis was fiercely loyal to the city that drafted him, to be sure. But he also had to believe he could get a real shot at a ring there, too. There’s no title for Giannis in Milwaukee, either, without Fiserv Forum, which opened in 2018. Because without Fiserv, the Bucks would have left town and wouldn’t have generated the revenue necessary to pay big contracts to the likes of Antetokounmpo and Middleton. And it took a lot of work — a lot — for the public-private partnership that committed $250 million in state funds — along with $200 million from the team’s current owners and former owner Herb Kohl — toward construction of the new arena to be approved in 2015. In 2014, several counties steadfastly opposed spending their dollars for a building in Milwaukee, arguing that few of their constituents would ever come to the city to attend events there. Which was its own story. The Racine County Executive at the time told me that he was a basketball fan, but he was dead set against spending for the new building. “In our particular case, the objection is that there’s no economic value to our county,” he said then. “We don’t get people staying in our hotels; we don’t get people eating in our restaurants; we don’t get people going to our bars. The economic value is to Milwaukee and Milwaukee County, in the sales tax. The value to our county is non-existent — I would say minuscule to non-existent. As a result of that, if Milwaukee and Milwaukee County want to provide public financing, that’s fine. I’m not arguing that. But they get all the benefits.” Tuesday, there were 65,000 people outside Fiserv, in what the team now calls the “Deer District,” counting down the final seconds of the clincher. Most, I’m guessing, were not from Milwaukee or its nearby suburbs. But they spent their money in the redeveloped part of downtown by the arena – which wouldn’t have happened if the Bucks were still playing at Bradley Center. But there’s no title for the Bucks, either, unless they failed the way they did the previous two postseasons. They blew a 2-0 lead to Toronto in the 2019 Eastern Conference finals, then got run over in the bubble last year by Miami. The team’s heart was elsewhere; the Bucks were the first NBA team to refuse to play in the postseason in August after the police shooting of Jacob Blake in nearby Kenosha. But it was that failure in Orlando, Florida, that forced Budenholzer to change the team’s offense and defense after two years of rigidly sticking to his old systems. Cue the dunker spot and more switching on defense. “COVID, the new schemes, things like that, new players — a lot of that uncertainty, those differences, they made all the difference,” Lopez said. “That’s what made us better — going through all that, absolutely, prepared us for this journey. We had our backs against the wall multiple times. And I think we can absolutely look back on those earlier moments of the season and see where we grew as a team, and as individual players. And all of that paid off in the long run.” So much had to break the Bucks’ way, too – up to and including Kevin Durant’s sneaker being about 2 inches too big in Game 7 of the second round. But every NBA champion gets some lucky breaks, too. That shouldn’t for one second take away from what Antetokounmpo and his team accomplished, against a worthy opponent, in a competitive and fun championship series. Giannis’ performance in these Finals was no dream or made-up story. It was the stuff of legend. -
