Alonso mozda ipak ponovo u Hondi?

Michael Andretti has been working diligently to bring Fernando Alonso back to the Indianapolis 500, and it sounds like a deal is imminent.

“It’s not done yet but it’s looking pretty good,” said Andretti on Wednesday from his shop in Indy. “We want it to happen, and I’ve just got to figure out how to get it funded. I think we can find a sponsor, but do I roll the dice, sign him and then hope to get it funded? I really enjoy working with the guy, and I want to make it happen.”

Andretti told RACER two months ago he wanted to run the two-time world champion but the big hurdle was getting Honda’s blessing. McLaren and Alonso parted company with Honda in Formula 1 with hard feelings after being criticized by the team and driver for lack of performance. Last May, in a solo effort by McLaren, Alonso had to run Chevrolet, but the engine had nothing to do with him failing to qualify.

It’s believed that Andretti has discussed Indy specifically with Honda and hasn’t yet met any resistance, but there hasn’t been any conversation yet regarding other races besides Indianapolis.

“We talked about it [running more races] and it’s possible, but nothing before Indianapolis,” said Andretti. “I don’t want to do anything to hurt our other efforts, but it would be great for the series.”

McLaren president Zak Brown had hoped to run Alonso in a third car this May for the newly-formed Arrow McLaren SP team, but told RACER recently the popular Spaniard has “his blessings” if he goes to Andretti, where he ran so strong in 2017.

PRUETT: Piecing together the 2020 IndyCar grid

Most of the part- and full-time seats have been filled for the upcoming NTT IndyCar Series season, but that doesn’t mean the silly season is over.

A.J. Foyt Racing, Carlin Racing, Dale Coyne Racing, DragonSpeed, and Juncos Racing sit on a list of teams whose entries await formal confirmation of who’ll drive, and in some cases, how many pilots will rotate through the same cockpit between St. Petersburg and Laguna Seca.

Starting at the top, when the Foyt team emerges next month for Spring Training at Circuit of The Americas, it will have a different look in almost every regard. Its year will involve two cars, at least four drivers, and has the signs of rebuilding season as the team looks to perform an engineering makeover.

Tony Kanaan, who joined the outfit in 2018, has been consistent in saying he’ll be back with Foyt, and there’s no reason to doubt the 2013 Indy 500 winner. Although the team has been reluctant to speak on the topic, it’s believed former Chip Ganassi Racing and Carlin Racing driver Charlie Kimball is in the frame for at least a partial season, if not the full calendar with Foyt.

And after Kanaan and Kimball, two more drivers are rumored to be part of a ride-sharing plan that could span the Nos. 4 and 14 Chevys.

Dalton Kellett, who completed more than 100 Road To Indy races from 2012-2019, is expected to make his IndyCar debut with Foyt along with ex-Dale Coyne Racing driver Sebastien Bourdais, who is the latest name to emerge in the conversation. But with a full season of IMSA racing on the docket with JDC-Miller Motorsports, it’s unclear where the four-time Champ Car champion would fit in the rotation. Will it be one full-time driver and three sharing the other car, or an even split with two in each entry?

Former Foyt race engineer Mike Colliver, who helped the Meyer Shank Racing team look rather impressive with Jack Harvey on a number of occasions last season, is expected to return to Foyt. Series veteran Mike Pawlowski, who spent the last five years with Andretti Autosport, is another name mentioned in Foyt’s race engineering reboot.

Kanaan, Kimball, and Kellett, plus Bourdais, and Colliver, and Pawlowski. That’s a lot of change to consider if it all comes together for the team in its first season since 2005 without ABC Supply as the primary sponsor.

Carlin Racing has been the subject of heavy rumors and intrigue during the off-season. The latest speculation includes the Florida-based team looking to sell its cars and exit the series, which was quickly dispelled in a call this week.

Although there’s no indicator as to who will drive its pair of Chevy-powered entries, a team spokesperson confirmed those cars will be participating at the February 11-12 Spring Training event, and the full season afterwards. Everyone from Max Chilton to Formula 2 race winner Sette Camara to former Williams Formula 1 driver Sergey Sirotkin have been suggested as options for the team.

Another interesting development we’ve been tracking is an initiative from longtime IndyCar mechanic and team manager Mitch Davis. Davis, who worked for Chip Ganassi Racing for many years and ran its ‘G2’ IndyCar division, joined Carlin at Toronto last year and is known to be exploring options to secure an ownership stake in Carlin’s IndyCar program and join its leadership group.

Dale Coyne Racing announced its new rookie driver Alex Palou in partnership with a new co-entrant, which gives us Dale Coyne Racing with Team Goh for its No. 19 Honda. Former Foyt race engineer Eric Cowdin, who served as Kanaan’s first race engineer when he came to America, will do the same with Palou during his rookie campaign.

By the end of the month, we should also have its second entry, the No. 18 Dale Coyne Racing with Vasser Sullivan Honda, confirmed with Santino Ferrucci in place for his sophomore year. Outside of the season-long championship, DCR’s third entry for the Indy 500 could become a source of interest.

Would the Mayor of Hinchtown be a good fit for a combined Indy Grand Prix/Indy 500 program? Considering the relative inexperience of DCR’s full-time duo, a veteran voice and former Indy polesitter would be an invaluable resource for the team to have, provided Hinchcliffe is unable to land a ride with a front-running operation.

DragonSpeed has committed to a six-round campaign, and continues to draw interest from a variety of drivers. Ben Hanley steered the car during the Chevy-powered team’s rookie season, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the Briton return for more. Whether he’d also tackle the ovals is a different question, as new DragonSpeed IMSA LMP2 driver Colin Braun, whose oval expertise is well known, continues to search for funding to make his IndyCar debut.

Juncos Racing is the last team of note with question marks hanging over its season. Talk of progress being made late in December towards a significant return in 2020 – following a steep downturn in appearances last year, where only two outings were recorded – was heard recently. If negotiations continue in the right direction, the scrappy team owner and his Chevy-powered squad could push St. Pete’s entry list to the high 20s for the season opener.

Factor in Fernando Alonso’s anticipated Indy 500 return with Andretti Autosport that could turn into a part-time gig after he’s done at the Speedway, along with the green light NASCAR Cup champion Kyle Busch has to try and make the show with a Chevy-powered team, and the first year of NTT IndyCar Series competition under the guidance of Roger Penske could be a memorable one.

Penske Racing president Tim Cindric told RACER’s Robin Miller there’s zero chance of Busch driving a fifth car for The Captain, so maybe the silly season has a few more miles left to go before the fun comes to an end.

Tony Kanaan will return with A.J. Foyt Racing for a five-race, all-oval program in 2020, which he has confirmed will be his last season as a full-time driver.

The popular 45-year-old Brazilian will suit up in Foyt’s No.14 Chevrolet for what has been dubbed his ‘TK Last Lap’ farewell season at the Indianapolis 500 on May 24, followed by Texas (June 6), Richmond (June 27), Iowa (July 18) and WWTR (August 22).

While 2020 will be his last full-time or part-time IndyCar season, Kanaan has left the door open to further Indianapolis 500 appearances.

Kanaan heads into 2020 with 377 career starts – second only to Mario Andretti’s 407 – which includes 17 wins, 15 poles and 78 podiums, the most recent of which came when he finished third at WWTR last year. He holds the active record for the most consecutive starts, with an unbroken streak of 317 stretching back to Portland in 2001.

STATEMENT ON THE PASSING OF JOHN ANDRETTI

It's with the heaviest of hearts we share that John Andretti has today lost his battle with cancer. John was a loving husband and father, a devoted son and a trusted cousin. He was a philanthropist, an advocate for the sport, a dedicated teammate, a driven competitor and most importantly a dear friend.

Through Race4Riley, John spent decades dedicating his time and fundraising attention to Riley Hospital for Children. When first diagnosed with colon cancer in 2017, John vowed to fight back and use his voice to help spread the word of prevention and early detection. He fought hard and stole back days the disease vowed to take away. He helped countless others undergo proper screening, and in doing so, saved lives.

We will forever carry with us John’s genuine spirit of helping others first and himself second. Our prayers today are with Nancy, Jarett, Olivia and Amelia, with our entire family, and with fans worldwide.

We urge all our followers to, please, #CheckIt4Andretti.

Cekamo nesto zvanicno.

Honda vetoes Alonso/Andretti Indy 500 deal

If two-time Formula 1 world champion Fernando Alonso is going to take another run at completing motor racing’s ‘Triple Crown’ by winning the Indianapolis 500, it will be with a Chevy-powered team.

RACER has learned that the Spaniard, whose name has been heavily linked to a return with the Honda-powered Andretti Autosport team, had the supply deal vetoed at the 11th hour.

After months of speculation, RACER understands that Honda Performance Development sought final clearance from the brand’s global headquarters in Tokyo ahead of the announcement, which was expected to be made last week, only to be told not to proceed with such a deal. Alonso was also in talks to remain with the team after Indy and participate at some of the road course races on the IndyCar schedule.

Multiple calls to Andretti Autosport and Honda to discuss the matter went unreturned.

This leaves the 38-year-old with an unexpected hole on his May calendar to fill with a team aligned with Chevy, the defending Indy 500-winning auto manufacturer. Ongoing efforts to salvage the deal are said to be taking place, but the recent Toyota Dakar rally driver is not expected to be welcomed inside the Honda IndyCar family.

Alonso impressed on his debut for Andretti with Honda in 2017, leading a number of laps before a late engine failure. However, his return last year was with a Chevy-powered McLaren entry due to the breakdown of the McLaren-Honda partnership in Formula 1, with Alonso having been very vocal about the Japanese manufacturer’s deficiencies regarding its power unit.

While McLaren has returned full-time to IndyCar in partnership with Schmidt Peterson as part of Arrow McLaren SP — again with Chevy power — Alonso was poised to race for Andretti in May, with a deal lined up and waiting be announced.

Alonso has been racing in numerous categories since leaving F1 at the end of 2018, including for Toyota in the World Endurance Championship and the Dakar rally, but wanted the most competitive seat possible as he goes in search of the Triple Crown. Having won the Monaco Grand Prix in 2006 and 2007, and the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2018, taming the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway with a victory at the 500-mile IndyCar event serves as the last leg to complete among the three great racing events.

Last year’s Indy 500 attempt saw Alonso fail to qualify, and he has since left McLaren having been an ambassador for the company through 2019.

Who will fill the unexpected Andretti vacancy at Indy? Image by LAT

The decision by Honda also leaves the perennial Indy 500 favorites at Andretti with a coveted seat to fill.

The unexpected reversal with Alonso, where a full complement of sponsors had been arranged by the team, should lead to a stampede of interested drivers seeking to claim the entry. Among the leading names to consider, former Arrow McLaren SP pilot James Hinchcliffe has an assembly of backers, a strong relationship with Honda, and a need to secure a team to run his month of May program. Hinchcliffe drove for Andretti’s team, where he won three of his six career IndyCar races, from 2012-2014.

Former Andretti Autosport Indy 500 driver Stefan Wilson, who last drove for the team at the Speedway in 2018 and finished 15th, is also known to be chasing a competitive seat for the race. Add in some of the other Indy 500 specialists, including former Andretti driver Carlos Munoz, and the veteran Oriol Servia, and Andretti will have an abundance of options to consider.

For Alonso, few opportunities remain unclaimed among competitive Chevy teams.

Team Penske has maintained it plans to run no more than the four cars it will enter. The front-running Ed Carpenter Racing team has its three-car effort in place, and does not intend to add a fourth this year.

Of the remaining Chevy teams to pursue, Arrow McLaren SP, Dreyer & Reinbold Racing, DragonSpeed, Juncos Racing, and A.J. Foyt Racing are the only known Indy 500 options for Alonso to explore if he wants to try and qualify for the 104th running of the signature American race.
