Ukraine’s capital Kyiv came under a large-scale Russian drone and missile attack overnight into Saturday, just hours after Russia and Ukraine began a major prisoner exchange.
At least eight people were injured in the attacks, which triggered fires and left debris strewn in districts throughout the city, the city’s mayor Vitali Klitschko said in a post on Telegram.
Explosions and loud sirens could be heard blaring across the capital in video shared by Reuters news agency. Several fires could be seen against the nighttime skyline.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz inaugurated a groundbreaking German brigade in Lithuania that is meant to help protect NATO’s eastern flank and declared Thursday that “the security of our Baltic allies is also our security” as worries about Russian aggression persist.
He said Berlin’s strengthening of its own military sends a signal to its allies to invest in security.
The stationing in Lithuania marks the first time that a German brigade is being based outside Germany on a long-term basis since World War II. “This is a historic day,” Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda said after meeting Merz. “This is a day of trust, responsibility and action.”

Putin opet 'provozao' Trumpa u najnovijem telefonskom razgovoru. Prakticno iste recenice koje je Trump objavio posle njihovog prvog razgovora pre nekoliko meseci - sada opet ponavlja. Tesko da ce ga iko vise ozbiljno shvatati.

“It was a very informative and quite a frank conversation, and very useful in this respect. First of all, I thanked the US president for US support in resuming direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine on a possible peace agreement.
“The US president voiced his position on a ceasefire. For my part, I noted that Russia, too, favours a peaceful settlement of the Ukrainian crisis. We simply must determine the most effective ways of moving towards peace.”

Bucharest's liberal Mayor Nicusor Dan has won Romania's presidential race, beating right-wing nationalist George Simion.
But nationalist George Simion isn't just rejecting what the exit polls say - that he's at least nine points behind Dan - he's claiming victory too.
“I am the new president and I am giving back power to Romanians," he has claimed. No smile on his face but a determined expression that shows he won't give this race up lightly.
The streets of central Bucharest are slowly filling with police cars.
Sirens are clearly heard in the streets.
Officers are polite and look calm – but obviously they are preparing for different scenarios, including protests.
Romania's foreign ministry has warned of a viral "fake news attempt" on TikTok and other social media platforms. It's highlighted a fake video which purports to show French soldiers in Romania wearing Romanian uniforms.
France has put out a statement saying it "categorically rejects" allegations regarding "alleged French interference in the Romanian presidential election". It has also urged everyone to act responsibly "out of respect for Romanian democracy".

A 28-year-old woman was killed, and three others including a four-year-old child were injured, according to Mykola Kalashnik, the governor of the Kyiv region.

Fundamental differences between Russia and Ukraine are on display again ahead of possible talks in Turkey.
Russia’s ambassador-at-large Rodion Miroshnik has just said that Kyiv only wants to discuss a ceasefire, but this is “incompatible with Moscow’s approach”.
He adds that no document has been agreed yet by the two delegations – and that’s not surprising at all given the continuing tensions and animosity.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is not among the names listed by the Kremlin as being due to attend peace talks on the war in Ukraine in Istanbul on Thursday, despite calls from Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky for him to attend.
The talks are scheduled for 10:00 local time (08:00 BST) in Istanbul's Dolmabahce Palace and will be closed to the press, Russian news agency TASS reported, citing a source familiar with the matter.
Zelensky will be in the Turkish capital Ankara on Thursday to meet President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
He said he would attend direct talks in Istanbul with Russia, but only if Putin also attended.
The US is expected to send a high-level delegation to the talks.
The country's top diplomat, Marco Rubio, arrived in Turkey on Wednesday, where he will meet Nato foreign ministers on Thursday.
Ahead of that meeting, Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said he met Rubio on Wednesday evening. Sybiha said he had reaffirmed Ukraine's commitment to US peace efforts, and called on Russia to "reciprocate Ukraine's constructive steps".
Rubio plans to travel onwards to Istanbul on Friday, where the State Department says he will attend talks with European counterparts to discuss the war in Ukraine.

Six Bulgarians have been sentenced to lengthy prison terms for spying for the Kremlin in the UK and across Europe.
During a lengthy trial in London, the Old Bailey court heard the cell was paid handsomely for their services, which included spying on two journalists who had exposed nerve agent attacks on Russian dissidents Alexei Navalny and Sergei Skripal.
Prosecutors had told the court they had conducted operations in the UK, Austria, Spain, Germany and Montenegro.
They targeted investigative journalists Christo Grozev and Roman Dobrokhotov, as well as Russian dissidents, political figures and Ukrainian soldiers training at a military base in Germany.
