A single, two-hour practice session will be run this afternoon at a time to be determined, after the medical helicopter has arrived and the track is dry.

Gejtvej je oval oblika spajalice sa jednim krajem uzim od drugog, relativno mali nagib u krivinama, duzina kruga 2 km / 1,25 milje, u danasnjem obliku postoji od 1996 (originalna staza je sagradjena 1967). Indikar je ovde gostovao 1997-2003, i ponovo od 2017. Poslednje dve trke su bile hit, sa sjajnom posetom i dobrom akcijom na stazi.

Portland se na kalendar vratio prosle godine nakon duze pauze, a bio je vozen od 1984 do 2007. Staza sa dugom tradicijom sagradjena 1960 i popriste mnogobrojnih legendarnih trka u IMSA kategorijama sportskih prototopova, krug duzine 3166 m relativno ravan bez velikih visinskih promena ali i prilicno brz (rekord staze ispod 58 sekundi), prakticno karting staza na steroidima. Prosle godine je bila zanimljiva trka, pobedio je Sato ali junak dana je bio Dikson koji je nakon masovnog udesa na startu pao na poslednje mesto - i na kraju zavrsio kao peti.

Sledeceg vikenda na redu je poslednja trka Indikar sampionata, trka za VN Montereja na Laguna Seki.

Nakon 15 godina pauze povratak na legendarnu stazu najbolje zapamcenu po trci iz 1996 i Zanardijevom momentu briljantnog ludila u poslednjem krugu trke u "Vadicepu". Mesto prepuno istorije i na dva i na cetiri tocka, Indikar sampionat je ovde bio redovan gost od 1983.-2004. a rekord po broju pobeda drzi Bobi Rehol sa 4, dok najbrzi krug zvanicno drzi Elio Kastoneves sa 1:07.722 postavljen 2000. u Rejnard-Honda Indikar bolidu, nezvanicno Rikardo Zonta u F1 Tojoti 1:06.309 postavljen 2006. tokom demo-voznje.

 

No, istorija je istorija a mi imamo da resimo pitanje sampiona za ovu sezonu. Cetvorica vozaca imaju teoretske sanse za titulu - lider Dzozef Njugarden koje je dovoljno cetvrto mesto ili bolje da postane neuhvatljiv a i peto mu odgovara, iza njega prakticno poravnati Rosi i Pazeno koji moraju da pobede a da Njugarden ne bude bolji od sestog mesta (ako bude peti, Rosiju pored pobede trebaju jos dva bonus poena a Pazenou tri - za pol, najvise krugova u vodjstvu, najbrzi krug), dok su Diksonu sanse samo u krajnjem teoretskom domenu.

 

Sto se tice same trke, niko ne zna sta da ocekuje, staza je za sve timove nepoznanica nakon toliko godina van kalendara, a nama ostaje da se nadamo da ce biti atraktivnija nego Sonoma gde smo uglavnom imali razocaravajuca finala sa vozicem od starta do cilja...

Tracking the championship progress of IndyCar’s four title contenders during the double-points season finale in Monterey should be rather easy.

 

At 593 points entering the September 20-22 WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca event, Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden will be on a mission to finish the 90-lap race with decent speed and minimal drama. He doesn’t need to win, or land on the podium to capture his second championship, and that might offer a small amount of comfort to the 28-year-old from Tennessee.

 

With one extra point on offer for earning pole on Saturday, another for leading a lap, and two more for leading the most laps, four bonus points will be in play that could shape the final standings. Here’s a look at the basic outcomes Newgarden and the three rivals pursuing his spot atop the championship are chasing:

 

Andretti Autosport’s Alexander Rossi holds second with 552 points, and while his 41-point deficit to Newgarden might seem small at a race that pays 100 points to win and has those four additional points on offer, the 27-year-old Californian will need to be spectacular when it matters in Monterey.

 

With a win and no bonus points for Rossi (652), Newgarden can cruise home in fifth without bonus points and win the title (653). If Rossi has a perfect weekend and earns the maximum 104 points available (656), Newgarden would need to finish fourth with no extra points (657) to deny Rossi the title.

 

Life becomes much harder for Rossi if he fails to win. Without bonus points for Rossi in second (632), Newgarden can win the championship by sauntering to the finish line in 10th without extra points in hand (633). If Rossi runs second and takes all the bonus points (636), Newgarden’s task would be to finish ninth (637).

Considering that Newgarden has finished fifth or better in 12 of the 16 races held this year, the size of the challenge facing Rossi is foreboding. Winning is the only solution available to Andretti’s contender that places a modest amount of pressure on Penske’s leader to react.

 

To paraphrase a quote once again from retired NASCAR Hall of Famer Ricky Bobby, “If Rossi ain’t first, he may as well be last.”

 

The situation facing Rossi is the same for Penske’s 35-year-old Simon Pagenaud, who’s third at 551 points.

 

His 42-point gap to teammate Newgarden is only one more than Rossi’s, and the needs for the 2016 title winner change very little. If Pagenaud wants to claim his second championship, and wins without earning any bonus points (651), Newgarden can finish fifth (653) while also lacking extra points and seal the title.

 

A perfect weekend for France’s Pagenaud (655) would force Newgarden to finish fourth (657) to add a second Astor Cup to the one he won in 2017. A second-place run for Pagenaud, with all four bonus points included (635), would have Newgarden targeting ninth to clinch the title (637).

 

Pagenaud is in identical territory to Rossi when it comes to needing an exemplary outcome in qualifying and the race to have any realistic chance of toppling Newgarden.

 

In fourth place at 508 points, defending series champion Scott Dixon is the longest of long shots to keep the crown. If the Chip Ganassi Racing driver wins and earns all four bonus points, the maximum number he could reach is 612. Newgarden would only need to finish 20th (613) with no extra points, to keep the New Zealander from winning the title.

 

In a field of 24 cars, the 39-year-old’s best possible outcome would need to see Newgarden engaged in a nightmarish scenario to facilitate a jump from fourth to first in the standings.

However, even amid that worst-case state, Dixon could finish second, earn all four bonus points, have Newgarden fail to take the start, and it still wouldn’t be enough. It’s pole position and a crushing win on Sunday for Dixon, plus cartoon anvils raining down on Newgarden in the opening laps – and even that might not be get the job done.

 

Factor in the drivers in second and third that also stand in his way, and Dixon’s small odds of becoming a six-time champ suggest 2020 is the next opportunity for it to take place.

Perfection or desperation. One of those two realities will need to come true for Rossi, Pagenaud, or Dixon at Laguna Seca.

 

With the inside lane of the downhill run to Turn 2 known as a place where big mistakes have been made on the opening lap and restarts – picture a reenactment of the carnage at Portland a few weeks ago – the drama Newgarden needs to avoid might come calling.

 

Factor in the hits and spins we routinely see entering the Corkscrew, under braking into the final corner at Turn 11, and the side-by-side collisions leaving the infield at Turn 5, and the stakes are high for IndyCar’s title-contending quartet.

 

Minus the ACME anvils and IndyCar bowling balls, Newgarden should be just fine. But, for those with strong memories, how many IndyCar races have gone according to plan in 2019? Not enough to let the championship leader sleep peacefully until the season’s over.

 

The answer to the title question will be provided starting at 12 p.m. PT Sunday on NBC.

Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon led a Honda 1-5 during the morning portion of IndyCar’s pre-race weekend test day at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca.

 

The reigning NTT IndyCar Series champion, who has a remote chance of retaining the title, turned eight laps during the two-hour session under warm and sunny skies. Dixon’s best lap (1m11.0996s) was comfortably faster than Harding Steinbrenner Racing’s Colton Herta in second (+0.2885s), CGR teammate Felix Rosenqvist in third (+0.3683s) Meyer Shank Racing’s Jack Harvey in fourth (+0.4499s), and Andretti Autosport’s Alexander Rossi in fifth (+0.4675s).

 

First of the Chevy-powered drivers was Team Penske’s Simon Pagenaud in sixth (+0.5319s), as he and Rossi, who are vying for the 2019 championship this weekend, were well clear of points leader Josef Newgarden in 19th (+0.9377s).

 

Firestone has allocated four sets of new tires for veterans and five for rookies today, which has led most teams to limit their running in the morning and plan to spend most of their time on track during the four-hour afternoon session that will better replicate conditions during Saturday’s qualifying and Sunday’s race.

 

Barring a brief red flag for a car that spun and stalled, and Penske’s Will Power pitting to have a trackside advertising banner removed from the nose of his car, the session produced no drama.

It was only testing, it didn’t pay anything and it wasn’t even on NBC Gold. But Colton Herta threw down a lap Thursday at Laguna Seca’s WeatherTech Raceway that should give the competition something to ponder overnight.

 

The 19-year-old rookie topped six hours of testing for Sunday’s IndyCar finale with a lap of 1m10.0720s around the scenic 2.238-mile road course in his Capstone Honda for Harding Steinbrenner Racing.

 

But the impressive part of that run was that it was half a second clear of everyone – with Will Power’s 1m10.5383s in his Verizon Chevy the second-best lap.

 

“It doesn’t mean much other than being set up for the rest of the weekend and giving you a good baseline to go off of,” said the second generation star who became IndyCar’s youngest winner ever last spring at COTA. “We did a lot of setup work, some good stuff, some bad stuff, but we were just going down the test plan.”

 

Herta’s time was a second quicker than Scott Dixon’s pace-setter in the morning session as the track rubbered up for IndyCar’s first visit here in 15 years.

 

Of course the focal point of this weekend is whether Josef Newgarden can capture his second championship in three years, or if Alexander Rossi can overcome his 41-point lead – or perhaps Simon Pagenaud come from a point further back than Rossi to beat both of them.

 

Newgarden was fourth fastest in the afternoon runs at 1m10.6404s, putting him a few hundredths behind Felix Rosenqvist, while Pagenaud was eighth fastest at 1m10.8131s, and Rossi ninth at 1m10.8231s.

 

Friday has a pair of practice periods, followed by one more Saturday morning prior to qualifying.
