Veteran Gregg, rookie Rosseno Trans Am West winners at Fontana

By: Trans Am | 18 hours ago

Simon Gregg’s TA class victory in Round 2 of the Trans Am Presented by Pirelli West Coast Championship at Auto Club Speedway was not how he wanted to claim it. But Nicholas Rosseno’s TA2 class win and first overall finish played out exactly to script in the young Californian’s wildest dreams.

Gregg (photo above) needed to complete only half of the race’s scheduled 36-laps/100.8-miles to claim the victory and maximum points as his only TA-class rival, Greg Pickett, was unable to start Sunday’s feature.

Pickett’s Ford Mustang, which won the West Series season-opener at Thunderhill Raceway, lost an engine in qualifying — as it had at Thunderhill. Late on Saturday evening, the team learned the spare was not plumbed to fit the Mustang engine bay, forcing them to withdraw.

“First, hearing about Greg [Pickett’s] engine was a bummer,” said Gregg, the soft-spoken Floridian who this month is celebrating 20 years with the Minnesota-based, Troy Benner-owned Derhaag team.

For his first race at Auto Club Speedway, Gregg had come focused on winning; had been fastest of all in practice and qualifying; and was determined to claim his fifth career Trans Am victory. With his only competition unable to start, though, Gregg had only to complete half the race distance to collect the victory. His crew sent him out to do “half distance plus one lap” which Gregg did dutifully, pulling away 3-5s per lap from the TA2 pack behind, retiring quietly on lap 20.

“I’m excited about [the next race at] Laguna Seca,” Gregg said in the morning, forced to hold back his enthusiasm until the next race in just a week’s time.

Thus the story at Fontana was the growing TA2 class, and it was a dramatic tale start to finish, with a big cast, a string of woes, and a happy ending for the trio of podium finishers.

It didn’t start well: The highly anticipated Brad McAllister vs. Anthony Honeywell / Mustang vs. Camaro duel in TA2 was over at the start as the differential in periodontist McAllister’s Thunderhill-winning and Fontana pole-winning PortlandImplantsDentistry.com Mustang failed and he coasted through the pit exit into the paddock.

CPA Honeywell’s second-fastest-qualifying Honeywell Competition/TFB Performance Camaro tore away into a comfortable lead which he’d extended to nearly 17 seconds on lap 25 when his alternator failed and he, too, coasted into the pits.

Honeywell’s retirement handed the lead on lap 25 to Michael Mihld who was suddenly in the spotlight, the Temecula, Calif., native having worked his way to the front from next to last on the grid, starting at the back because a broken suspension pick-up forced him to miss qualifying.

But Mihld’s story lasted only one lap: A driveshaft broke as he accelerated toward Turn 12 on the very next lap and he rolled silently to a stop.

In the space of two laps, Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.’s Rosseno (BurrtecWaste/Wildhammer/Amsoil Camaro) moved from third to first, into a comfortable lead he would extend to 23.14s and never relinquish.

Sounds like a boring second half, but this race was never dull, thanks to a breathtaking battle between David Smith’s Shockwave Marine Camaro and Cameron Parsons self-supported similar car which lasted in varying degrees of intensity from laps 17 to the final lap 36, the pair passing and re-passing several times.

“We certainly didn’t give each other anything, and I’m glad I did short-track racing,” said Canadian Smith after the race. “I really thought I could pick up the draft at the start from McAllister, but it didn’t work out that way…”

McAllister’s differential breaking on the line caught out Smith who was right behind, and sent the red Shockwave Camaro to nearly the back of the TA2 field — into the clutches of young Parsons who had started last after missing qualifying altogether with alternator problems.

In spurts and bursts, the pair slowly worked their way forward, all the way up to second and third following the spate of mid-race retirements, where their scrap in the closing laps kept the crowd in the pit lane boxes on their feet.

For his back-to-front efforts and race-long battling, Smith took the Cool Shirt Systems Cool Move of the Race award.

l-to-r-parsons-rosseno-smith.jpg?w=1000&Podium (l to r): Parsons, Rosseno and Smith.

Rosseno was a jubilant winner, his consistency over the closing laps belying his lack of experience: Fontana was only his second-ever race start.

“I haven’t raced a car competitively ever, other than quarter midgets and stuff when I was a little kid. License last year and then Trans-Am this year.”

With such a big lead, was Rosseno hearing things in those final laps?

“I started smelling things actually,” he said. “I started to get a little hint of gear oil. We’d been having problems with the rear end throughout practice and the race at Thunderhill. But we made it to the finish!”

Rosseno, an IT specialist by day, acquired the ex-Justin Napoleon Camaro last year and maintains it with his dad, a “family project” that earned an impressive reward at Auto Club Speedway.

Though retiring from the race just after half distance, Honeywell salvaged points for sixth and now sits atop the standings with 53. Fontana winner Rosseno is next up with 52, with Smith (51), Mihld (50) and Thunderhill winner McAllister (45) rounding out the top five.

In TA, Gregg has a commanding points lead with 66 to Pickett’s 34.

Four races remain and there’s no rest for the weary West Championship competitors whose next race is next weekend at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca where they will join the Trans Am Presented by Pirelli regulars.

Billy Monger earns his first single-seater win in Pau Grand Prix

By Elliot Wood

Published on Sunday May 19th 2019

Billy Monger took his first single-seater victory by gambling on wet tyres in the Pau Grand Prix Euroformula Open race.

The 20-year-old's Carlin-run car is specially adapted for him to use after the amputation of both his legs below the knees as a result of a British Formula 4 crash two years ago.

Monger had qualified 11th but peeled into the pits at the end of the warm-up lap to switch from slick to wet tyres after rain started to fall on the grid.

As he made his way up the order, the dominant Motopark team fought over the top four positions, led by surprise poleman Julian Hanses.

Hansas held on to the lead for 14 laps, until Red Bull-backed team-mate Liam Lawson made a failed move on the German through the twisty Turn 10/11 sweep.

Although Lawson - who qualified fourth after winning the first race of the weekend - was faster than his team-mates, Motopark's choice to keep its drivers on slick tyres meant Monger was rapidly closing on them.

He was just a second behind when the clash between Hanses and Lawson took place, and after holding off Carlin team-mate Nicolai Kjaergaard on a safety car restart to clear the crashed cars, Monger pulled away up front to win by 1.121 seconds.

Lawson's fellow Red Bull junior and Motopark team-mate Yuki Tsunoda switched to wets after his team-mates clashed, having already been overtaken by Monger, and used his fresh rubber advantage to close onto the back of the top two as the race ended.

But Monger and Kjaergaard were able to stay clear of Tsunoda to complete the Carlin one-two.

Monger had returned to single-seater racing with Carlin in BRDC British Formula 3 last season, where he was a podium finisher from the opening event and finished sixth in the championship.

He initially attempted to get into the new FIA F3 Championship for 2019 before opting for Euroformula Open, which uses previous generation F3 machinery.

Prva tri mesta ocekivano (njih tri su vec dokazale svoj talenat i definitivno zasluzuju sansu da napreduju) a i Marta Garsija koja je iznenadila podijumom u prvoj trci pokazuje da to nije bila slucajnost.

Rossi, Hinchcliffe to contest Bathurst 1000

img_9916.jpg?w=1000&h=600&crop=1

By: RACER Staff | 17 hours ago

Alexander Rossi and James Hinchcliffe will join the field for this year’s Bathurst 1000 as a wildcard entry.

The car will be run by a collaboration between Andretti Autosport and United Autosports under the Walkinshaw Andretti United banner for the October 10-13 event.

The Holden ZB Commodore entry will run under No. 27, which has been an Andretti Autosport number with a successful history. Rossi currently uses the No. 27 in the IndyCar Series, Hinchcliffe also ran it during his time with the team, while it is also seen on Andretti Autosport’s Indy Lights and Formula E entries.

It will form the third car out of the Walkinshaw Andretti United stable, alongside those of Scott Pye and Warren Luff, as well as James Courtney and Jack Perkins.

“It’s 100 percent a bucket list item,” said Rossi. “It’s in one of those six big races alongside the likes of the Indy 500 and 24 Hours of Le Mans. Bathurst is right up there, so to be able to have this opportunity to do it with Walkinshaw Andretti United and still be close to home with the Andretti Autosport connection is very cool, and I can’t wait to get started.

“It’s going to be a steep learning curve and I’m very aware of that. I’ve got a few friends who are Supercars drivers, so I know how talented the competition is, and how challenging this specific racetrack is, but at the same time it’s a really exciting challenge and something that has been on my target list for a long time. We’re going to go out and do the best we can.

“The team is excellent, there are guys who are going over who I know from the IndyCar program, so with all of that in place and having a great team mate to learn off, and other local guys as well, it’s going to be the best possible recipe to have a successful event.

“As much as we are going to try and put our best foot forward, it’s important for us to enjoy the experience as well, because it’s certainly a once in a lifetime opportunity.”

While the race will be Rossi’s first in a Supercar, Hinchcliffe competed for Garry Rodgers Motorsport at the Gold Coast 600 in 2012.

“Bathurst is one of those bucket list things,” he said. “As drivers we look back at the era of guys like Mario (Andretti) jumping in a different car every weekend, the nature of the sport now is quite different and it’s not quite as easy to do that. When these opportunities come up you want to jump at them and really grab a hold of them.

“The Gold Coast race some years ago was a huge blast and a bucket list thing to, but for Supercars the Bathurst 1000 is their Indy 500, it is their 24 Hours of Le Mans, it’s their hallmark event, so to get to add that one to the résumé is very special.

“For sure it’s a big ask, we are neophytes to the car, to the track, to everything involved, but I think we are both competitive and Alex is an immensely talented guy, a very driven guy, and together we can push ourselves and the team and hopefully not make ourselves look too silly.”

The pair will have a three-day test at Winton on October 1-3 to gain some familiarity with the car ahead of the 1000.

Fernando Alonso emerged unscathed after rolling his Toyota Hilux during his rally debut in South Africa.

The two-times Formula 1 world champion was competing in the Lichtenberg 400, round five of the South African Cross Country Series.

Alonso was running competitively prior to the crash. He placed third in the prologue stage of the event and was running in third when he rolled his Hilux 23 kilometres into the first loop of the event.

The impact broke the car’s windscreen which meant Alonso and his co-driver, motorcycle rally champion Marc Coma, had to complete the loop wearing goggles. They were able to continue to the service point where the car was repaired.

The pair were allowed to begin the second loop of the stage 15 minutes ahead of the field to gain experience without having to run in the dust of their competitors. However Alonso and Coma suffered a further setback when the car hit a flock of birds which damaged the windscreen again. Coma had to hold the damage screen in place after it collapsed.

Having posted competitive times earlier in the event, Alonso and Coma reached the chequered flag but was not classified due to the time lost. The rally was won by Henk Lategan ahead of Giniel de Villiers and Chris Visser.

Alonso was participating in the event as he gathers experience of the Toyota Hilux ahead of a potential entry in the Dakar Rally. Toyota motorsport team principal Glyn Hall said the team was “ahead of the plan by far” with Alonso.

“At 40 [kilometres] in he was still 20 seconds off the leading car, which was Henk at the time. After that the windscreen was too damaged,” he told RaceFans. “So overall, fantastic achievement. He’s got some great skills, just got to get a little bit of experience now.”

Neverovatna zavrsnica TCR sezone.

Calderon set to make Super Formula history

Tatiana Calderon is aiming to become the first female driver to take part in the Japanese Super Formula series this season.

As well as serving as Alfa Romeo's F1 reserve driver, the 26-year-old Colombian had just completed her maiden year in the FIA Formula 2 championship with BWT Arden. She was team mate to Anthoine Hubert, who tragically died in a fatal accident at Spa in August.

With Arden quitting the series, Calderon was left seeking new challenges elsewhere in the world of motorsport. She has now secured a seat with the Honda-powered ThreeBond DragoCORSE squad, which is returning to Super Formula for the first time since 2016.

“With ThreeBond DragoCORSE participating in the Super Formula series from this year, we conducted an extensive search for a driver,” said team owner Ryo Michigami who will himself continue to drive for the team in the SUPER GT GT300 class.

Michigami said that by selecting Calderon, "We have fulfilled another of my wishes for ThreeBond DragoCORSE: to always strive after new things and create history.

“I encourage you to be on the lookout for ThreeBond DragoCORSE and the girl power of Tatiana Calderon," he added. "And I hope to see all of our fans at the circuit!”

Calderon had previously accepted an invitation to attend the W Series 2020 driver selection event in Almeria, southern Spain in September in an advisory role, despite having previously described the all-female championship as a "step backwards" for women in motorsport.

She subsequently decided against pursuing a place in the W Series, saying she had "no interest" in taking part despite losing her F2 place when Arden gave up its place to HWA which quickly confirmed a driver line-up consisting of Ferrari junior Giuliano Alesi and series veteran Artem Markelov.

"It's looking very difficult to stay in F2," she said in December. "The budget is a big issue at the moment as well, so we are looking at other opportunities at the moment, still with the mind that I want to reach F1."

Calderon will also take part in the 24 Hours at Daytona this month alongside Katherine Legge, Ana Beatriz and Christina Nielsen in the all-female GEAR Racing team.

While she may be the only women driver on the Super Formula grid in 2020, she won't be the only rookie. Also among those also taking up places will be Red Bull protege Juri Vips, who raced for the HitechGP team in the inaugural FIA Formula 3 championship last year in which he finished in fourth place in the drivers standings.

And Pietro Fittipaldi will also be back in Japan, having made his debut in the championship in 2017. Plans to run a full season with Team LeMans were thwarted when Fittipaldi was injured in a World Endurance Championship racing accident at Spa just a few weeks later.

The 23-year-old Brazilian driver, the grandson of two time Formula 1 champion Emerson Fittipaldi, went on to compete in the IndyCar Series with Dale Coyne Racing and spent 2019 in DTM and the F3 Asian Championship.

F2 race winner Nobuharu Matsushita had also been expected to be among the Super Formula intake for 2020, but his name was notably missing from Honda's announcement on Friday.

The 26-year-old Japanese driver finished in fourth place in last year's support series championship, leaving him lacking the FIA driver points needed to qualify for an F1 superlicence.
