Another offseason of silence will come to a welcome end next week as six NTT IndyCar Series teams pay a visit to Sebring International Raceway for two days of testing.

A.J. Foyt Racing, Carlin Racing and Chip Ganassi Racing will take to Sebring’s short course on Monday to kick off the festivities. Of the known drivers set to appear in Florida, Foyt will have Sebastien Bourdais in action on Monday and new full-season teammate Dalton Kellett in the second car for both days. Like Kellett, Carlin’s Max Chilton will also drive on Monday and Tuesday. All four of Ganassi’s drivers will venture out in their cars, with reigning champion Scott Dixon, Marcus Ericsson, along with newcomers Alex Palou and Jimmie Johnson anxious to record their first laps of the new year.

In an interesting twist, the other half of the Sebring circuit will be utilized for IMSA sports car testing where CGR’s brand-new Cadillac DPi-V.R program led by Kevin Magnussen and Renger van der Zande will turn its first laps ahead of the upcoming Roar Before The 24 and Rolex 24 At Daytona on the final two weekends of January. CGR estimates that across its five cars, a staff of 80 will be onsite in Sebring.

On Tuesday, four Andretti Autosport entries driven by Colton Herta, Ryan Hunter-Reay, Alexander Rossi and Marco Andretti will share the track with Carlin and Foyt, and add Meyer Shank Racing and Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s Graham Rahal and Takuma Sato to the mix.

The first day of private NTT IndyCar Series testing in the new year had a familiar outcome as reigning champion Scott Dixon posted the fastest lap on Sebring International Raceway’s short course.

Dixon’s best unofficial tour of the Floridian road course (52.32s) in the No. 9 Honda was followed by Chip Ganassi Racing teammate Marcus Ericsson (52.42s) in the No. 8 Honda, new CGR driver Alex Palou in the No. 10 Honda (52.45s), A. J. Foyt Racing’s Sebastien Bourdais in the No. 14 Chevy (52.59s), Carlin Racing’s Max Chilton in the No. 59 Chevy (52.89s), Foyt’s Dalton Kellett in the No. 4 Chevy (52.97s), and Sebring IndyCar newcomer Jimmie Johnson completed the runners in the No. 48 Honda (53.69s).

“We did fight quite a bit with rear issues with a street course package, and worked on a bunch of things and found quite a few things as dampers are concerned,” Bourdais told RACER. “Tried to evaluate the stuff they worked on over the off-season, and in that respect, we got some good reads and learned some stuff. They worked on the shaker rig not so long ago, and we put in a lot of effort to validate what they did. It was a good test.”

Compared to most Sebring IndyCar tests where ambient temperatures in the 80s and 90s are the norm, Chilton says cooler conditions made for a different – and welcome – experience in the first of his two-day test.

“This year, there’s going to be limited in-season testing, so I said let’s use two days now to work through as many of the good ideas our engineers have come up with by putting in a lot of miles at Sebring,” he said.

“We did 140 laps today and won’t do as many tomorrow, but it will be a good use of our time. I’ve got a new engineer, Luke Mason, who was my strategist last year, and we get on quite well. It was a good day, I felt quite fit in the car. It was mid-60s at Sebring, so we had to set the car up different than usual.”

Chilton will stay over for Tuesday’s running where he’ll have Andretti Autosport, Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, Meyer Shank Racing, and Foyt’s Kellett to share the track.

The end to two days of private testing by a handful of NTT IndyCar Series teams at Sebring saw Andretti Autosport’s Alexander Rossi finish atop the unofficial lap chart with a 52.27s tour of the shortened road course in the No. 27 Honda.

Andretti or Andretti-affiliated drivers were directly behind, with Colton Herta’s No. 26 Honda (52.38s), Meyer Shank Racing’s Jack Harvey in the No. 60 Honda (52.54s), and Ryan Hunter-Reay’s No. 28 Honda (52.68s) leading the Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing duo of Graham Rahal in the No. 15 Honda (52.73s) and Takuma Sato in the No. 30 Honda (52.92s).

Completing the nine-car test was Carlin Racing’s Max Chilton in the No. 59 Chevy (53.02s), Marco Andretti in the No. 98 Honda (53.13s), and A.J. Foyt Racing’s Dalton Kellett in the No. 4 Chevy (53.59s).

“Got a lot done today and a lot of seat time, plus the weather was quite nice,” Herta told RACER. “It’s hard to judge on which team is quicker since everybody is working on their own testing agenda; but we got a lot of good testing done for street courses.”

For Kellett, who is embarking upon his first full season with Foyt in IndyCar, the offseason performance gains were noticeable.

“We had a good two-day test. We came with a full test plan, got through most of it, and we learned quite a bit, focusing on our damper package,” he said. “I’m pretty confident we have a stronger package than we did last year.”
