.... i buducoj koleginici

lololol, kakvo smehotresno bodovanje...

Thiem: Das wackelt extrem.

In New York früh rausfliegen wäre dagegen besser für Paris.

Interview with Thiem: “Hit Djokovic now? It's too cheap for me "

In the TT interview, Austria's tennis star Dominic Thiem (26) talks about the Corona debacle on the Adria Tour, false criticism of Alexander Zverev and Novak Djokovic and the "THIEMs 7" in Kitzbühel.

Mr. Thiem, are you still counting how many corona tests you are currently doing?

Dominic Thiem: How it came out with the Adria Tour in Belgrade (several players tested positive for Corona in June, note), I did a test every day for ten days in a row. Just until the incubation period was over.

So that's part of the daily routine?

Thiem: Definitely for a few days. I went to the airport for testing. If the result was negative, it was time to train again and then soon out to the airport. That was the rhythm. But it was better than going to quarantine. I don't see that I should bunker at home when I'm healthy. That's why I decided to take the tests.

Speaking of quarantine: German tennis star Alexander Zverev has been heavily criticized for making a statement after the tournament in Belgrade that he was virtually isolating himself for 14 days. Shortly afterwards he was filmed at a party. How do you feel about it?

Thiem: He should have done it like me. He was also tested negatively, only his mistake was that he first wrote the statement and then was unlucky enough to be filmed at the party. But I don't like the way people criticize him. He is treated as if he were an elementary school child. But he's a 23 year old man. Sure, he made a mistake - but I don't understand why everyone is getting involved.

Among other things, "tennis bad boy" Nick Kyrgios, who publicly criticized Zverev for the action.

Thiem: Kyrgios has built a lot of nonsense himself. I understand even less when he interferes with everything. It would be better if he came to terms with himself rather than always criticizing the others.

Are you clear about what happened in Belgrade? You have already apologized, now donate the prize money to the Children's Cancer Aid (St. Anna Children's Hospital, note).

Thiem: It was clear in advance that we would donate the prize money. The Adria Tour was therefore a really good idea, it was only meant for a good cause. It is clear that mistakes have occurred there that make me extremely sorry. The hygiene rules were not observed. But it is the same as with Zverev: I do not understand why so many shoot at Novak Djokovic (initiator of the tournament, note). He didn't break a law. You have to say that clearly.

Serbian Prime Minister also protected Djokovic after the Corona debacle because the measures came from the government.

Thiem: Exactly, he didn't do anything. If I ignore our role model function - where we made mistakes - I don't understand the criticism of us. I was in Nice now, I saw pictures of other cities. It is no different than the tournament in Belgrade. And then hit Djokovic like this? It's too cheap for me.

In Nice, a new mode was tried out at the “Ultimate Tennis Showdown” that is more reminiscent of computer games. How promising is that?

Thiem: The format is really casual. You can play cards, it's all very tactical. You have to think exactly how to act. It can get a lot hotter if you play in the full stadium.

Full stadiums are also not an issue for your “THIEMs 7” tournament in Kitzbühel from Tuesday with a maximum of 500 spectators. How much do you miss that?

Thiem: I already miss the mood. But on the other hand, it is important that there are tournaments at all. The main thing is that we have tournaments - the main thing is that we can play.

Do you still believe in the planned return of the ATP tour in Washington (USA / from August 14, note)?

Thiem: It wobbles extremely. In America, the corona numbers are increasing enormously, now player Frances Tiafoe has also been tested positively. And it is also far from certain that the US Open will take place. Otherwise that would be the start back to normal.

You played your last ATP game on February 21, you were in the Australian Open final. Are you particularly concerned that you have to pause in such top form?

Thiem: Not that. I immediately tried to see the positive sides. I was at home as much as I had in a long time, I was hiking a lot, I was able to meet many more friends. Life was only completely different until I was able to play tennis again on April 20. After that everything was back to normal. Except for the trips.

They also left the Südstadt performance center and moved to Alt-Erlaa. There you train under your father Wolfgang and with you the five best players in Austria. How beneficial is that?

Thiem: It was ideal for all of us. The fact that the five best tennis players train together with us is something like this nowhere else in the world. That was extremely good for us. We all want to improve and improve.

The supposed highlight of the season, the French Open, does not rise until the end of September. A disadvantage?

Thiem: First of all, it's cool that the French Open is taking place. No matter whether in May or October. The only problem is: there is only a two-week gap between the US Open and the French Open - getting far with both will be almost impossible. If I play the US Open really well, the French Open will be very, very difficult. However, flying out early in New York would be better for Paris. I have to sacrifice one of the two Grand Slams, that's the way it is right now.

But do you wish that you could not defend your title in Kitzbühel (at the same time as week two of the US Open)?

Thiem: It is a win-win situation. If I play well in New York, I can get far there. Otherwise I take the plane and look forward to Kitzbühel. I can only win. (laughs)

Starting today, Kitzbühel will see better players than they have seen in a long time at THIEMs 7 (invitation tournament). What is the expectation?

Thiem: It was interesting for me. I contacted everyone if they wanted to play, so I saw it from the other side. Kitzbühel will always have a special place in my heart, so I'm all the more pleased that we have such great players. There are five top 15 players. People can look forward to it - it will be really good.

Since last year’s Championships, we have also taken the time to give consideration to the evolution of the sport and the mechanisms of allocating seeding for The Championships. Given the quality of competition, entertainment and modern grass courts, following detailed discussion with the player groups, the AELTC has decided that the grass court seeding formula used since 2002 has served its time, and from The Championships 2021 seeding for the Gentlemen’s singles draw will be based solely on ranking. There will be no change to the method of seeding for the Ladies’ singles draw.
